What is diabetes?

This is when too much sugar or glucose is in the
blood.
What are the causes of diabetes?

Some of the causes of diabetes are:

• High fat diet

• Obesity

• Aging

• High alcohol intake
What are the symptoms of diabetes?
    Some symptoms of diabetes are:

•   Poor wound healing
•   Unexplainable weight loss
•   Excessive thirst
•   Excessive urination
•   Excessive eating
ROLE OF DIET IN THE LIVES OF
         DIABETIC PATIENTS
Diabetes and diet are very closely related. Eating the
right foods play a major role in controlling the
disease.

 Tips for senior nutrition
• Reduced sodium consumption

• Enjoy good fats

• Fiber up

• Avoid “bad” carbohydrates

• Put five colours on your plate
The dietary needs of senior citizens

For seniors, the benefits of healthy eating includes
increase in mental acuteness, resistance to illness
and disease, higher energy levels a more robust
immune system, faster recuperation times and
better management of chronic health problems.
WHAT IS ANEMIA?

Anemia is a medical condition in which the red
blood cell count or hemoglobin is less than normal.
CAUSES OF ANEMIA

  Any process that can disrupt the normal life span of
  a red blood cell may cause anemia. Therefore it is
  caused by two ways:

• a decrease in production of red blood cell or
  hemoglobin

• a loss or destruction of blood
DIET IN THE LIVES OF ANEMIC
                   PATIENTS
  • Adequate quantity of protein should be present in diet.


  • Foods rich in iron like green leafy vegetables, plantain and whole
  grain cereals



• Food rich in vitamin B complex and particularly B6 like parboiled rice,
  liver and milk

  • Including citrus fruits, guava, green pepper in diet will meet the
  requirement of vitamin C.


 • Liver oil, fortified vegetable oil, sea foods will provide Vitamin E.




• Foods rich in folic acid like pulses, green leafy vegetables

 A balanced diet is important to maintain health
and a sensible body weight.
ROLE OF DIET IN THE LIVES OF
                TEENAGERS
• Plenty of starchy carbohydrates - bread, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals
  and potatoes



• Plenty of fruit and vegetables - at least five portions every day



• Two to three portions of dairy products, such as milk, yoghurt, and
  pasteurized cheeses
• Two servings of protein, such as meat, fish, eggs, beans and pulses



• Eat regular meals




• Drink six to eight glasses of fluid a day.
• Plenty of starchy carbohydrates - bread, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals,
  chapattis, couscous and potatoes
• Plenty of fruit and vegetables - at least five portions every day
• Two to three portions of dairy products, such as milk, yoghurt, and
  pasteurized cheeses
• Two servings of protein, such as meat, fish, eggs, beans and pulses
• Not too many fatty foods
• Limit sugar-rich food and drinks
• Other important dietary habits to follow during adolescence include:
• Drink six to eight glasses of fluid a day.
• Eat regular meals, including breakfast, as it can provide essential nutrients
  and improve concentration in the mornings. Choose a fortified breakfast
  cereal with semi-skimmed milk and a glass of fruit juice.
• Adequate quantity of protein should be present in diet.
   • Foods rich in iron like green leafy vegetables, plantain, lotus stem,
   puffed rice, whole grain cereals and iron fortified foods should be
   included in the diet.
   • Food rich in vitamin B complex and particularly B6 like whole
   grain cereals, parboiled rice, liver, milk etc should be taken.
   • Including citrus fruits, guava, green pepper in diet will meet the
   requirement of vitamin C.
   • Liver oil, fortified vegetable oil, sea foods will provide Vitamin E.
   • Foods rich in folic acid like pulses, green leafy vegetables,
   legumes. Liver and eggs should be included.
   • Supplementary and fortified foods may be a help in controlling or
   preventing anemia.

  • 9. The dietary needs of senior citizens For seniors, the benefits of healthy eating includes increase in mental acuteness, resistance to illness and disease, higher energy levels a more robust immune system, faster recuperation times and better management of chronic health problems.
  • 10. WHAT IS ANEMIA? Anemia is a medical condition in which the red blood cell count or hemoglobin is less than normal.
  • 11. CAUSES OF ANEMIA Any process that can disrupt the normal life span of a red blood cell may cause anemia. Therefore it is caused by two ways: • a decrease in production of red blood cell or hemoglobin • a loss or destruction of blood

  • 13. DIET IN THE LIVES OF ANEMIC PATIENTS • Adequate quantity of protein should be present in diet. • Foods rich in iron like green leafy vegetables, plantain and whole grain cereals • Food rich in vitamin B complex and particularly B6 like parboiled rice, liver and milk
  • 14. DIET IN THE LIVES OF ANEMIC PATIENTS • Including citrus fruits, guava, green pepper in diet will meet the requirement of vitamin C. • Liver oil, fortified vegetable oil, sea foods will provide Vitamin E. • Foods rich in folic acid like pulses, green leafy vegetables

  • 17. • Two servings of protein, such as meat, fish, eggs, beans and pulses • Eat regular meals • Drink six to eight glasses of fluid a day.

Choose a fortified breakfast cereal with semi-skimmed milk and a glass of fruit juice.
  • 20. • Adequate quantity of protein should be present in diet. • Foods rich in iron like green leafy vegetables, plantain, lotus stem, puffed rice, whole grain cereals and iron fortified foods should be included in the diet. • Food rich in vitamin B complex and particularly B6 like whole grain cereals, parboiled rice, liver, milk etc should be taken. • Including citrus fruits, guava, green pepper in diet will meet the requirement of vitamin C. • Liver oil, fortified vegetable oil, sea foods will provide Vitamin E. • Foods rich in folic acid like pulses, green leafy vegetables, legumes. Liver and eggs should be included. • Supplementary and fortified foods may be a help in controlling or preventing anemia.
