Morning everyone?\n\nJust the other day, someone asked me a question?\n\nThis question was asked by a non Christian?\n\nThe question was, "if that is a Christian, why does he behave like that?"\n\nSo, how do you answer the non Christian? (ask congregation)\n\nAt the heart of the question is actually a more important question? Can we consider the misbehaving Christian a Christian? \n\nAnd if we narrow it down, the core question is this, "what makes a Christian?" or "who is Christian?".\n\nThis is the topic of my teaching today.\n\nLet us pray.\n
Is a person a Christian because he has a Christian name?\n\nIs a person a Christian because he claims he is Christian?\n\nIs a person a Christian because he is from a Christian family?\n\nIs a person a Christian because he is baptized?\n\n\n\n
Is a person a Christian because he has a Christian name?\n\nIs a person a Christian because he claims he is Christian?\n\nIs a person a Christian because he is from a Christian family?\n\nIs a person a Christian because he is baptized?\n\n\n\n

Is a person a Christian because he prayed the sinner's prayer?\n\nIs a person a Christian because he believes in Jesus?\n\nIs a person a Christian because he attends church service?\n\nIs a person a Christian because he prays and reads the bible?\n\n\n\n

Now consider this.\n\nIf a person who says he is Christian but lives like a non-Christian, is he then a Christian?\n\nOn the other hand, if a person who is a non-Christian lives like a Christian, is he then a Christian?\n\nHow do we decide?\n

So we ask the question, "what makes a Christian?".\n\nObviously, a Christian is someone who believes in Jesus.\n\nThe next question is "what does it mean to believe in Jesus?"\n\nOften, we do not give time to think about these very important questions. \n

Let's see what the Lord Himself says.\n\nHere is Jesus teaching about those who come to hear him and call him Lord.\n\nWhat is Jesus' requirement for those who call Him Lord?\n\nIs it just merely saying a prayer to 'accept' Jesus as Lord?\n\nIs it just merely 'hearing or reading' His words and teachings?\n\nIs it NATO? No Action Talk Only?\n

Believing in Jesus or accepting Him as Lord means following Him and doing what He says or commands.\n\n(Actually, the phrase we often use 'accepting Jesus as Lord' is rarely used in the Scriptures. It gives the picture 'as if we are in the authority to accept or deny Jesus', 'as if we are in power to do so, to do to Jesus what we like'. This is a false picture. So we end up living our lives on our own and only giving time to serving Jesus when 'it's convenient' to us. We are in danger of this.)\n\nIf we just hear, know, say, but do not do, we are actually not believing at all. Because believing according to Jesus means obeying and doing what He commands. There is no such thing as 'faith without works'. \n\nIf we only hear and know, but do not do, there will be serious consequences because in the end, all will collapse and be destroyed when Jesus comes back to judge.\n

Here is another example.\n\nOne says 'no' but did.\n\nOne says 'yes' but did not do. \n\nWho obeyed the father?\n\nThe one who says will not do but actually did. \n\nThe one who will enter the kingdom of God is the one who obeyed by acting on what he heard.\n

So a Christian is one who believes in Jesus. \n\nBelieving in Jesus means knowing His words.\n\nBelieving in Jesus also means acting on His words.\n\nA Christian then is one who knows Jesus' words and obeys.\n

Where do we start?\n\nThe 4 gospels would be the best place to start.\n\nIf you want to narrow down, Matthew 5-7 is a good start.\n\nMatthew 5-7 is like Jesus way of giving the commandments of God like Moses did at Mount Sinai.\n\nAnd the sum of the Law is "So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." Matt. 7:12\n

Now, a Christian is a person who believes in Jesus, and because he believes, he follows and obeys Jesus' commands.\n\nBut what if he fails, is he still a Christian?\n\nThat's where the grace of God is. Whenever we fail, if we repent and start again, God is ever willing to forgive us and bless us with more grace to continue.\n\n\n\n

It's a cycle of hearing, obeying and repenting, and hearing and obeying again.\n\nOnly don't stop. Keep it up until the end. Until we finish the race and receive the reward.\n\nThroughout the race, God and His witnesses will cheer us on. God provides His Spirit and grace to give us strength and faith to complete the race.\n
