They say knowledge is power, but there are an infinity number of books, courses, etc you
can get about business and Internet marketing… so how do you avoid information overload?
What do you really need to discover and specialize about in Internet marketing?
If you want to build an online business selling your own products or services there are
THREE major types of knowledge you want to acquire.
The first type is the most important for any business: Marketing and Selling.
Marketing is all about creating interest and desire for your products or services. You can’t
just send traffic to a website and sit back for money to pour in. One of the essential on your
to do list is making your products desirable.
One example of this is to give huge amounts of value for free in an ebook, on your website,
on a DVD or CD, etc which will make your prospects think: “Well if the free stuff is this good,
the paid stuff must be fantastic!”
Selling is all about convincing prospects to purchase from you, copywriting is the most
important selling related knowledge/skill you want to acquire. Other skills related to
marketing and selling include website conversion, email marketing, USP (unique selling
proposition) etc.
The second type is about the latest technologies/trends. See there are always new
technologies on the Internet, it’s an evolving place and you want to learn and adapt these
technologies to your business.
When I got started in Internet marketing blogging wasn’t popular. Online businesses didn’t
use blogs. But when people started to create and read blogs and they become the latest
trend on the Internet (just like Facebook is now) it was highly important that businesses use
blogs because people loved them! Today it’s facebook! Some others over the years included:
podcasts, rss feeds, videos, youtube. In the near future the new technology/trend will
probably be mobile!
The third type is how to drive traffic to your website/s. If you’re building a list it includes
also how to get a lot of subscribers, if you have a blog it includes also how to get a lot of
blog readers and maybe rss subscribers, etc.
So there you have three types of knowledge you have to posses. Remember then that
knowledge alone is NOT power. Applied Knowledge Is Power.
