A presentation at the workshop "Rich and loonely or poor and popular?" at the Dublin Core conference in Lisbon on September 4th, 2013. The main hypothesis is that when publishing (linked) data, the main criteria should not be richness and poorness, but suitability for purpose, granularity and adherence to agreed-on models.

Thanks to its wide coverage and general-purpose ontology, DBpedia is a prominent dataset in the Linked Open Data cloud. DBpedia's content is harvested from Wikipedia's infoboxes, based on manually created mappings. In this paper, we explore the use of a promising source of knowledge for extending DBpedia, i.e., Wikipedia's list pages. We discuss how a combination of frequent pattern mining and natural language processing (NLP) methods can be leveraged in order to extend both the DBpedia ontology, as well as the instance information in DBpedia. We provide an illustrative example to show the potential impact of our approach and discuss its main challenges.

With the transition of the Web of today from an information repository to a suite of services, the demand for machine-readable data to support the latter is now greater than ever. The social and, more generally, community element is proving to be a valuable medium to convey such a bulk of knowledge. Linked Data is a leading body of standards for publishing and using open knowledge bases on the Web, however, it very much relies upon the notion of identity. Every object of the world being described should be uniquely identified in order to be effectively manipulated. Music is a specially provocative domain of interest for such Web knowledge bases, being a topic where most people feel confident they can contribute to, yet with varying degrees of factual knowledge, personal inclination or scholarly rigour. Curating a dataset that covers an aspect new to this landscape, as is the evidence of listening experiences, means dealing with partial, inexplicit or underspecified information. A likely implication is that several elements of a listening experience, such as the listeners, the time in history or the music being heard, can be described to an extent but not identified, thus in stark contrast with a founding principle of Linked Data. This talk will illustrate the nature of the main elements of fuzzy knowledge that emerged from the contributions to the Listening Experience Database, elaborate on the countermeasures adopted and lessons learnt from the life-cycle of LED data, and assess the state of maturity of Linked Data technologies for accommodating such use-cases.

Tutorial on Linked Data for Digital Libraries, given by me, Uldis Bojars, and Nuno Lopes in Valletta, Malta at TPDL2013 on 2013-10-22. http://tpdl2013.upatras.gr/tut-lddl.php This half-day tutorial is aimed at academics and practitioners interested in creating and using Library Linked Data. Linked Data has been embraced as the way to bring complex information onto the Web, enabling discoverability while maintaining the richness of the original data. This tutorial will offer participants an overview of how digital libraries are already using Linked Data, followed by a more detailed exploration of how to publish, discover and consume Linked Data. The practical part of the tutorial will include hands-on exercises in working with Linked Data and will be based on two main case studies: (1) linked authority data and VIAF; (2) place name information as Linked Data. For practitioners, this tutorial provides a greater understanding of what Linked Data is, and how to prepare digital library materials for conversion to Linked Data. For researchers, this tutorial updates the state of the art in digital libraries, while remaining accessible to those learning Linked Data principles for the first time. For library and iSchool instructors, the tutorial provides a valuable introduction to an area of growing interest for information organization curricula. For digital library project managers, this tutorial provides a deeper understanding of the principles of Linked Data, which is needed for bespoke projects that involve data mapping and the reuse of existing metadata models.

Open data is a crucial prerequisite for inventing and disseminating the innovative practices needed for agricultural development. To be usable, data must not just be open in principle—i.e., covered by licenses that allow re-use. Data must also be published in a technical form that allows it to be integrated into a wide range of applications. The webinar will be of interest to any institution seeking ways to publish and curate data in the Linked Data cloud. This webinar describes the technical solutions adopted by a widely diverse global network of agricultural research institutes for publishing research results. The talk focuses on AGRIS, a central and widely-used resource linking agricultural datasets for easy consumption, and AgriDrupal, an adaptation of the popular, open-source content management system Drupal optimized for producing and consuming linked datasets. Agricultural research institutes in developing countries share many of the constraints faced by libraries and other documentation centers, and not just in developing countries: institutions are expected to expose their information on the Web in a re-usable form with shoestring budgets and with technical staff working in local languages and continually lured by higher-paying work in the private sector. Technical solutions must be easy to adopt and freely available.

Libraries are moving towards the (Semantic) Web as the main platform for data exchange. In order to keep the data interoperable, they need to consider with whom they want to exchange information and how to create network nodes that others can connect to. The working hypothesis is that the might be achieved by more heavy use of the LRM Work entity. With Fake News and Alternative Facts being part of the everyday agenda, the notion of trustworthy data is getting increasingly important. Government agencies have an important role to play here as suppliers of authoritative information. In http, media types are often used in content negotiation, but those can often only say something about the format of the data, not about the semantics used within the data. This is particularly an issue with data in RDF where the same resource can be described in several different ways using different RDF vocabularies (e. g. DublinCore, foaf or schema,org). When deciding on how to describe cultural heritage resources in common exchange formats (e. g. What do we need to consider when we map knowledge organisation systems to each other? A EDUG (European Dewey User Group) workshop in Naples looked at this question with particular attention to the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). MARC is dying, some people say, but what comes instead? The Library of Congress has initiated the Bibliographic Framework Transition Initiative (BIBFRAME) that develop a transition path from traditional, records-based bibliographic descriptions to a model built on linked data principles. Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (German National Library, DNB) is among the early implementers. This presentation held at SWIB 2013 in Hamburg gives an overview of the initiative, the activities performed by the DNB so far and what the future might look like.

In the last ten years there has been much change in the Dewey ecosystem. One driver has been the European Dewey User Group (EDUG). This presentation, which I held at the EDUG meeting in the National Library of Norway, Oslo in April 2013, tries a look into the crystal ball in order to find out what the Dewey ecosystem looks like in ten years' time. The main points: 1) Dewey has changed some internals, including licensing, versioning and use of facets 2) DDC interoperates well with other knowledges information systems and we have well-established crosswalks in place in order to improve information retrieval 3) The integration of classification data into end-user interfaces is mainstream If this becomes true depends on the people who use the system! If they want it to happen, it will.

This presentation was held at the World Library and Information Conference 2012 in Helsinki. It is a companion to the position paper by Jürgen Kett et al. (http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:101-2012052306) which discusses the requirements on a national bibliography in the 21st century. The paper argues that a national bibliography needs to integrate itself into the World Wide Web, since this is where information exchange takes place today. This should be made using linked data technologies and the data should be published under an open license. As a case study, we present the work done at the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, where circa 70% of the database is already published as linked open data.

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly.
