9. Gham Power
Gham Power is recognized by the Nepal Government as a company that is pre-
approved to install solar home systems and institutional solar PV systems.
Gham has 2 branch offices and over 10 installation partners across the
country.
With Kiva funding, Gham Power is able to offer loans to fund the upfront cost
of a very small electricity utility grid. The loan is disbursed to an individual
entrepreneur, who in turn provides access to solar energy to other members
of the community. This loan enables the individual to both start a business
and create solar energy infrastructure in rural residential communities.
Interest rate: 0% APR, 22% PY (Median for MFI’s in Country), 31.6% (All Kiva
partners)
9
10. SunFarmer
SunFarmer is a nonprofit organization that brings solar energy to hospitals,
schools, and other institutions that lack reliable energy. According to the
World Bank and UN, an estimated 1 billion people use health services without
electricity and over 291 million children go to primary schools without access
to any electricity. Lack of electricity prevents access to basic healthcare,
education, and other services that are fundamental to alleviating poverty and
improving quality of life.
SunFarmer's loans are used to install solar energy systems at health facilities,
schools, and other critical service institutions in remote areas that currently
have little or no access to electricity. Funding from Kiva will be used for
loans given directly to these institutions
Interest rate: 13% APR (This field partner), 22% PY (Median for MFI’s in
Country), 31.6% (All Kiva partners)

Seek investors – consider these questions
1. Does the company's product or service address a large and growing market need?
2. Can the company scale quickly enough to take advantage of that market
opportunity?
3. Does the company have a defensible competitive advantage?
4. Can the management team execute on the potential outlined in the first three
criteria?
14
15. Things to Consider
Deciding which platform:
Where you are located.
What type of project you are launching.

What is CrowdFunding?
It is an alternative method of accumulating funds. Traditionally people go to banks and get loans with high interest rates.
The definition of crowdfunding is “the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet”
Crowdfunding allows people to accumulate funds from the general public. The idea is to get small amounts of money from a large pool of people.
This is a great chance for businesses to showcase their business idea/product and projects to the entire world.
There are many platforms on which a business can do crowdfunding, typically crowdfunding uses an online platform.
There are many websites that allows you to present your project/product/idea.
Usually they would include an introduction of the project, short video clip, list of rewards/products and various images that will elaborate the details and progress
Although Crowdfunding seems like a simple idea to raise funds, it is not as easy as it seems.
This is not to say that we cant be successful, we just need to follow some general steps:
Have a compelling idea or message moving people emotionally is very important, we need to market our product/project so that many people can share the feelings about a cause or idea
It is important that we sell the idea and the meaning behind the idea and not the product. The focus should be on WHY and not WHAT we are trying to do with the funds
We need to link the people around us first. This means family and friends, then families of our friends and the friends of our friends’ family
There are many different models of crowdfunding.
For the purpose of my presentation, I will focus on four major models.
Donation Model, Pre-Order Model, Reward-Based Model and Loaning Model
Donation – basically asking for donations to raise fund for a project
Pre-Order – selling an idea that you have been working on and promising the funders a product once the product is launched
Reward-Based Model – giving something small reward (like a key chain or a mug) for their contribution
Loaning – instead of getting “free” money, it is basically getting a loan from an organization
