2. In 1951, African American people in America were
seen as the second-classed citizens even the Civil War was
over. They had to attend poorly equipped schools and
worked as lowly jobs like porters, ditch-diggers, servants,
and so on. They could not use the same public facilities as
the whites, including restrooms, restaurants, theaters, or
parks. In a bus, they had to take the back seat.
In that case, Hughes wanted to express this situation
into a poem.
3. What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore-
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over -
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

8. Raisin
A raisin is a grape that has been dried up.
Like a raisin means a long-sitting unreached dream
that loses its "juice" or spirit and then shrinks.
A grape is usually fresh and plump, but then it is dried
up to be a raisin that is shriveled.
9. The speaker tells us that having a deferred dream is painful.
A dream deferred tell us what will happen if we postpone our dream
too long.
A deferred dream make us lifeless like a raisin in the sun.
The pain will be worse because it is untreated, fester like a sore. If
we stay postponing our dream, it will stink and rot and it becomes
disgusting for the dreamer, then it is better to throw it away than
keep it. It will stuck like a crust on something sweet if we ignore it
too long. A postponed dream will not be moving, it just stays and
droops down, it is like a heavy load that sags. And at the end, our
deferred dream makes us lose our hope, live in despair or chaos, or
burn in frustration.
