First impressions
Look at the picture – do you know what landmark is shown?
What city can you see at the end of the bridge?
Which of the following words might you use to describe this city?
industrial wealthy civilised poor full of opportunities slum
What type of person lives here, do you think?
If this city were a metaphor for something, what might it represent?
Now imagine the side of the bridge that you can’t see. Do you know anything about
the area? What do you think it might be like? Who might live here?
If this bridge were a metaphor for something, what could it represent?
Neighbourhood profile
Use the internet and books in the library to research the area of Red Hook, Brooklyn in the
1950s. Use your findings to create a profile of the neighbourhood at that time.

the number of inhabitants, where they came from and the type of work they were
employed in
a description of the area including its history
