A Recitative in Seven Parts
I. Enunciation of Belief
P. Many-named Magnificent:
You are Father to us all.
R. Against the possible, I believe. I exult in the Lord my God!
P. Raised from the dust,
You hewed mankind from nascent earth.
R. Against the possible, I believe. I exult in the Lord my God!
P. And whence we came,
Again we fall: dust unto the dust.
R. Against the possible, I believe. I exult in the Lord my God!
P. Charged forth in life, gilded with sin,
To the end we ride, sailing toward death.
R. Against the possible, I believe. I exult in the Lord my God!
P. Our flesh has no glory seat; our thoughts no death lament.
Even so our souls concur from beyond the grave, and rise.
R. Against the possible, I believe. I exult in the Lord my God!
P. Unto forever and for everlasting,
We shine by grace in Your dominion.
R. Against the possible, I believe. I exult in the Lord my God!
P. And unto everlasting, and for all the ages,
And the ages surpassing ages, You are God.
R. You are my salvation, God of every land. You are my foundation, Lord of Lords.

2. II. Enunciation of Mystery
What am I to do, O Lord?
Will you not vouchsafe my life within me?
For angst flies fast upon me
And the dangers of this world
Are as spears; they pierce even my sides.
R. Your doubts are as the rains;
Even the deluge shall wane
And the flood dry up.
This I do, that you may believe.
This I do, that you may live.
Though I pray to you, my God
My enemies charge ever onward;
In my weakness, they grow strong;
In my fear their anger rages.
Where is my stronghold, Adonai?
R. Your heart you have abandoned
And the stir of your soul is as soft
Even as a whisper. Listen!
This I do, that you may believe.
This I do, that you may live.
What hope have I to hear?
Even so evil bellows, and the wings
Of death beat as drums upon the air.
My foe is near to me;
There is darkness all around me.
R. Your trust is shallow as the grave;
Am I not the resurrection and the light?
Save heart; rejoice within you; I am near.
This I do, that you may believe.
This I do, that you may live.
O my God, where is my enemy?
Where has the evil of this day retreated?
I am saved; though I believed it not.
And You have lifted me up,
Even in the darkest of my hours.

3. III. Enunciation of Thanks
Have we not grace?
R. My Lord, we have grace!
Are we not blessed?
R. My Lord, we are blessed!
Have we not joy?
R. My Lord, we are joyful!
Speak then: What is your thanks?
R. For the winds and the sun; for the sands and the stars; for all manner of nature, born and engendered.
What is your thanks?
R. For the trials of the weary and the hope of the lost; for the promise of wisdom and lives lived in
courage.
What is your thanks?
R. For the gracious and winsome; for the bitter and bold; for the curious and craven; for daughters and
sons.
What is your thanks?
R. For the end of long lives; for the laughter of infants; for the love of a lover; for the sorrow of hearts.
What is your thanks?
R. For renewal and wedlock; for crisis and calm; for cries of the suffering and tears of the holy.
What is your thanks?
R. For this day and the morrow; for the past and the future; for the moments of Yours, now and forever.
I have heard you, my Sons and my Daughters. Have you not grace?
R. My Lord, we have grace!
Are you not blessed?
R. My Lord, we are blessed!
Have you not joy?
R. My Lord, we are joyful!

4. IV. Enunciation of Hope
O, surely sickness calls my name
And calamities consume me!
The wrath of the Lord crushes all my bones
And evil stirs from every corner of my house.
There is no safety in this life; I am a desolation.
R. True God: try me well unto my death; even so shall I live.
O, whither the water flows, my mouth is dry
And to eat I have not bread nor honey.
The emptiness of my soul shrouds all my thoughts
For the wanderings of my mind
Stray far from You, God of my spirit.
R. True God: try me well unto my death; even so shall I live.
O, days mount upon days in sadness
And there is no end to my weeping;
My tears fall from a well that will not dry.
No thing causes me a happiness;
No reason have I for rejoicing.
R. True God: try me well unto my death; even so shall I live.
O, when shall light return to me
And when will the darkness cry out?
For there are plagues of every kind across these lands.
Not even in the shelter of Your house
Is there a refuge.
R. True God: try me well unto my death; even so shall I live.
O, how do I not know your ways, my God?
For suffering is your namesake and anger your rod.
Am I forever to walk with the hand of evil
At my unrighteous back?
Is there a day of coming for my Lord?

5. V. Enunciation of Wisdom
To you who cry out in songs of praise and thanksgiving: Savor humility at your hands.
R. O God, sound out your voice, and favor the just.
To you who esteem the gifted and the gifts they employ: Savor discretion at your hands.
R. O God, sound out your voice, and favor the just.
To you who mete out punishment and inveigh against the transgressor: Savor prudence at your hands.
R. O God, sound out your voice, and favor the just.
To you who suffer in the pangs of poverty and degradations of the flesh: Savor serenity at your hands.
R. O God, sound out your voice, and favor the just.
To you who charge with duty, and are blessed with authority: Savor the truth at your hands.
R. O God, sound out your voice, and favor the just.
To you who are privileged with means and the wealth of this world: Savor charity at your hands.
R. O God, sound out your voice, and favor the just.
To you who are called to uplift this creation: Savor equanimity at your hands.
R. O God, sound out your voice, and favor the just.
To you who are sons and are daughters; to you who are mothers and fathers; to you who are sisters and
brothers: Savor the Maker, the Father, the Lord of All Wisdom.

6. VI. Enunciation of Love
P. The chambers of the day have not held you, my God:
Not the sun nor the moon in dances of light
Nor the swales swollen with rains
Nor the fabric of the grass
Nor the maze of the forest.
From the thrust of the sea to the gates of the sky,
Boundless are you; roaming the shores and the fields.
R. Whatever are we to You, O God beyond all names?
Whatever bounty may we bring you, Christ, Lord and Master?
P. Have we not upbraided you?
R. Even so: Your love embraces us.
P. Have we not beat you?
R. Even so: Your love eases us.
P. Have we not insulted you?
R. Even so: Your love comforts us.
P. Have we not cursed you?
R. Even so: Your love extols us.
P. Have we not stripped you?
R. Even so: Your love enrobes us.
P. Have we not derided you?
R. Even so: Your love redeems us.
P. Have we not broken you?
R. Even so: Your love supports us.
P. Have we not defiled you?
R. Even so: Your love purifies us.
P. Have we not upended you?
R. Even so: Your love strengthens us.
P. Have we not infuriated you?
R. Even so: Your love consoles us.
P. Have we not scourged you?
R. Even so: Your love heals us.
P. Have we not hung you high upon a cross?
R. Even so: Your love forgives us.
P. Have we not put you to your very death?
R. Even so: Your love resurrects us.

7. VII. The Glory of the Lord
All holy creatures set upon this earth,
All angels in the host of heaven,
All spirits past their day,
All good and righteous things:
Sing to the glory of the Lord!

All you nations praise him;
All you sons rejoice;
All you daughters look to Zion
And give thanks for the glory of our God!
