HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN
ALLOWS US TO CREATE AND DELIVER
SOLUTIONS BASED ON PEOPLE’S NEEDS
HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN:
- Design new solutions to design challenges
- Hear the needs of the people and communities they’re designing for
- Create innovative approaches to meet these needs
- Deliver solutions that work in specific cultural and economic contexts
- Centered in optimism and embracing constraints and complexity
HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN:
ISO standard of human-centered design describes 6 key principles that
will ensure a design is user centered:
1. The design is based upon an explicit understanding of users, tasks
and environments
2. Users are involved throughout design and development
3. The design is driven and refined by user-centered evaluation
4. The process is iterative
5. The design addresses the whole user experience
6. The design team includes multidisciplinary skills and
perspectives
HUMAN CENTERED SOLUTIONS:
- Industrial products
- Technologies
- Buildings
- Marketing/communication campaigns
- Websites
- Services
- Collaboration options
- Management methods
- Books
- Etc.
HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN CHALLENGES:
- Poverty
- Climate change
- Food shortage (malnutrition)
- Healthcare
- Suppression (discrimination)
- Trash
- Etc.
The HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN process can be divided into 3 main
phases the HEAR phase, the CREATE phase and the DELIVER phase.
The HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN process is a divergend and convergend
process, that stimulates critical thinking and systemsthinking.
The HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN process includes multidisciplinary skills
and perspectives
The HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN process is iterative. It ‘s about learning
by doing and testing assumptions
1st pedicap test in the Netherlands
2nd e-pedicap solar powered test in Kenya
HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN THE HEAR PHASE
1. Identify problem area (which knowledge do we need?)
2. Recognize existing knowledge
3. Gap in knowledge (identify people to speak with/ target group)
4. Develop research approach & choose methods
5. Gather knowledge/ field work
6. Interpret & visualize knowledge (identify patterns, themes and
opportunity areas)
HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN THE CREATE PHASE
1. Identify design challenge
2. Develop ideation approach & choose methods (designing
for, with, within or by your target group?)
3. Create solutions
4. Interpret & visualize opportunity areas
5. Choose solutions
6. Develop solutions
7. Test feasibility
8. Gather Interpret & visualize feedback on solutions
HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN THE DELIVER PHASE
1. Identify value proposition
2. Develop implementation approach & choose methods
3. Ideate implementation options
4. Interpret & visualize implementation options
5. Choose implementation options
6. Identify resources required for delivering solutions
7. Make implementation plan
8. Test viability
9. Evaluate outcomes
DEVELOP DESIGN THINKING MINDSET
HEAR
1. Form a team/ collaborations
2. Develop your mindset
3. Be empathic, be curious
4. Iterate
CREATE
4. Be optimistic, be creative
5. Think visual
6. Prototype/ validate
7. Iterate
DELIVER
7. Make things tangible/viable
8. Iterate
THE METHOD: HCD CANVASSES

THE METHOD: HCD CANVASSES
B.VASTBINDER & J. SPOELSTRA (AMIADESIGNER)
The Canvasses are a process tool that guides the individual user/ team of
users through the Human Centered Design process. The canvasses
facilitate ‘design thinking’ behavior like divergent and convergent
steps, iteration, validation etc.
The Canvasses where developed with the idea to make the HCD process
available to more users (both innovation process facilitators and problem
owners) and democratize the design process.
The use of the canvasses and canvasses themselves can be adapted to
your specific needs. You could for example use them individually, change
the sequence (CHD instead of HCD), decide on your own planning or
incorporate tools to help you take certain steps. Some of these tools
could for example be found in IDEO.org’s HCD Toolkit.
THE BOOK: HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN
IDEO.ORG & IDEO (T.BROWN – CHANGE BY DESIGN)
The Hear Canvas facilitates the
discovery steps
1. Identify problem area
2. Recognize existing knowledge
3. Gap in knowledge
4. Develop research approach &
choose methods
5. Gather knowledge/ field work
6. Interpret & visualize
knowledge
The Create Canvas facilitates the
design steps
1. Identify design challenge
2. Develop ideation approach &
choose methods
3. Create solutions
4. Interpret & visualize
opportunity areas
5. Choose solutions
6. Develop solutions
7. Test feasibility
8. Gather Interpret & visualize
feedback on solutions
The Deliver Canvas facilitates the
deliver/implementation steps
1. Identify value proposition
2. Develop implementation
approach & choose methods
3. Ideate implementation
options
4. Interpret & visualize
implementation options
5. Choose implementation
options
6. Identify resources required for
delivering solutions
7. Make implementation plan
8. Test viability
9. Evaluate outcomes

DEMOCRATIZING THE DESIGN PROCESS: MOVIES IN
USE!
HCD canvasses:
• A4’s
• Black and white
• Using existing tools
• Adaptable to different timeframes, goals etc.
• Easy translatable to different languages
• Easy translatable to different cultures
• Etc.
WE ARE STILL DEVELOPING THE CANVASSES: HOW?
http://vimeo.com/59137121
At the ITM University in Indonesia
we tested the first idea of the 3
HCD students together with local
engineering students and teachers
https://vimeo.com/69304999
In Amsterdam (4 months later) we
tested the posters build up out of
A4’s with students from Elisava and
Knowmads, who got to choice 1
poster for every project the are
working on
WHAT WOULD WE LIKE TO
ACCOMPLISH WITH
THE HCD CANVASSES?
EMPOWERING YOU TO CREATE/
FACILITATE YOUR OWN SOLUTIONS!

  • 1. HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN ALLOWS US TO CREATE AND DELIVER SOLUTIONS BASED ON PEOPLE’S NEEDS
  • 2. HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN: - Design new solutions to design challenges - Hear the needs of the people and communities they’re designing for - Create innovative approaches to meet these needs - Deliver solutions that work in specific cultural and economic contexts - Centered in optimism and embracing constraints and complexity
  • 3. HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN: ISO standard of human-centered design describes 6 key principles that will ensure a design is user centered: 1. The design is based upon an explicit understanding of users, tasks and environments 2. Users are involved throughout design and development 3. The design is driven and refined by user-centered evaluation 4. The process is iterative 5. The design addresses the whole user experience 6. The design team includes multidisciplinary skills and perspectives

  • 7. The HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN process can be divided into 3 main phases the HEAR phase, the CREATE phase and the DELIVER phase.
  • 8. The HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN process is a divergend and convergend process, that stimulates critical thinking and systemsthinking.
  • 9. The HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN process includes multidisciplinary skills and perspectives
  • 10. The HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN process is iterative. It ‘s about learning by doing and testing assumptions 1st pedicap test in the Netherlands 2nd e-pedicap solar powered test in Kenya
  • 11. HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN THE HEAR PHASE 1. Identify problem area (which knowledge do we need?) 2. Recognize existing knowledge 3. Gap in knowledge (identify people to speak with/ target group) 4. Develop research approach & choose methods 5. Gather knowledge/ field work 6. Interpret & visualize knowledge (identify patterns, themes and opportunity areas)
  • 12. HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN THE CREATE PHASE 1. Identify design challenge 2. Develop ideation approach & choose methods (designing for, with, within or by your target group?) 3. Create solutions 4. Interpret & visualize opportunity areas 5. Choose solutions 6. Develop solutions 7. Test feasibility 8. Gather Interpret & visualize feedback on solutions
  • 13. HUMAN CENTERED DESIGN THE DELIVER PHASE 1. Identify value proposition 2. Develop implementation approach & choose methods 3. Ideate implementation options 4. Interpret & visualize implementation options 5. Choose implementation options 6. Identify resources required for delivering solutions 7. Make implementation plan 8. Test viability 9. Evaluate outcomes
  • 14. DEVELOP DESIGN THINKING MINDSET HEAR 1. Form a team/ collaborations 2. Develop your mindset 3. Be empathic, be curious 4. Iterate CREATE 4. Be optimistic, be creative 5. Think visual 6. Prototype/ validate 7. Iterate DELIVER 7. Make things tangible/viable 8. Iterate

  • 16. THE METHOD: HCD CANVASSES B.VASTBINDER & J. SPOELSTRA (AMIADESIGNER) The Canvasses are a process tool that guides the individual user/ team of users through the Human Centered Design process. The canvasses facilitate ‘design thinking’ behavior like divergent and convergent steps, iteration, validation etc. The Canvasses where developed with the idea to make the HCD process available to more users (both innovation process facilitators and problem owners) and democratize the design process. The use of the canvasses and canvasses themselves can be adapted to your specific needs. You could for example use them individually, change the sequence (CHD instead of HCD), decide on your own planning or incorporate tools to help you take certain steps. Some of these tools could for example be found in IDEO.org’s HCD Toolkit.

  • 22. DEMOCRATIZING THE DESIGN PROCESS: MOVIES IN USE! HCD canvasses: • A4’s • Black and white • Using existing tools • Adaptable to different timeframes, goals etc. • Easy translatable to different languages • Easy translatable to different cultures • Etc.
  • 23. WE ARE STILL DEVELOPING THE CANVASSES: HOW? http://vimeo.com/59137121 At the ITM University in Indonesia we tested the first idea of the 3 HCD students together with local engineering students and teachers https://vimeo.com/69304999 In Amsterdam (4 months later) we tested the posters build up out of A4’s with students from Elisava and Knowmads, who got to choice 1 poster for every project the are working on
