Preaching with Passion!
What if we learned to see people and
not just their problems?
● Mt 9:36 But when he saw the
multitudes, he was moved with
compassion for them, because
they were distressed and
scattered, as sheep not having
a shepherd.

Passion vs. Compassion!
● Passion = any powerful or compelling emotion
– Mt 21:12 Then Jesus went into the temple of
God and drove out all those who bought and sold
in the temple, and overturned the tables of the
money changers and the seats of those who sold
doves.
● Compassion = sympathy and sorrow for another;
a feeling of wanting to help someone who is sick,
hungry or in trouble
– Mt 9:36 ... He was moved with compassion for
them, because they were weary and scattered, like
sheep having no shepherd.

A key element in preaching with
passion is having compassion!
Being Moved With Compassion!
●In the life of Christ we find Jesus being “moved with
compassion” 8 times!
●4 times in Matthew alone, with an added story in
between for inference!
– Mt. 9:36; 14:14; 15:32 & 20:34
– A story to show our need for this (Mt. 18:21-35;
key verses 27 & 33)
●10,000 = @ 3,000 shekels, 75lb, $840K each =
$8.4B if it was gold!
●100 = a days pay, $64 = $6,400!

Jesus the passionate preacher!
Passion = any powerful or compelling
emotion
●Would you say that Jesus cared for people?
●I believe the old saying is true, “people don't
care how much you know, until they know how
much you care!”
●We need to live in such a way that people will
see the love of God in us!
–Jn. 13:34-35 “by this all will know!”

I. Right Heart!
Mk 12:30 'And you shall love the LORD your God
with all your heart, with all your soul, with all
your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the
first commandment.
●When I was in preaching school in Lakeland
one of my teachers would often say, “if you want
to be a preacher you need to have two things, a
tuff hide and a tender heart!”
●The Bible spends a great deal of time
addressing the importance of the heart!

The importance of the heart!
Mt 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye,
being evil, speak good things? for out of the
abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh
●The heart is said to be “the life source of the
body” but the Bible declares it to be “the life
source of the soul!”
●The first and greatest commandment is “love
the Lord thy God with all thy heart!”
–Mt. 22:37; Mk. 12:30 & Lk. 10:27
–Each begins the same way “all thy heart!”

II. Right Head!
Php 2:5 Let this mind be in you which was also
in Christ Jesus,
●Going back to the 1st and Greatest Commandment,
the heart is where our love begins, but not where it
ends!
–In Mt. there are 3 elements in this, in Mk & Lk
there are 4!
–Heart, soul, mind & strength!
●Sometimes people can have a right heart, but a
wrong head!
–Rom. 10:1-3 cf. Act. 23:1

This can be seen in “true worship!”
The woman at the well (Jn. 4)
●There are two elements involved in
right/true worship! (Jn. 4:23-24)
–In spirit/Spirit (right heart/ by the Spirit of
God)
–In truth (right head/ according to the truth)
●These need to be in balance and it is
always both of them together and not one
without the others!

III. Right Harvest!
Mt 9:37-38 Then He said to His disciples, "The
harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few.
"Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out
laborers into His harvest."
●It is only after these first two are in place and we
will reap the right results!
–Gal. 6:7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked,
for whatever one sows, that will he also reap”
●We are in the planting and watering business, but
God brings the harvest!
–1 Cor. 3:6

When God’s Word is preached with the
right heart, right head it will naturally
produce the right harvest!
● Is 55:10-11 "For as the rain comes down, and
the snow from heaven, And do not return there,
But water the earth, And make it bring forth and
bud, That it may give seed to the sower And
bread to the eater, So shall My word be that
goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to
Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent
it.
