1. Briefly about Ulaanbaatar Public Library (UPL)
1980 – established in central district of Ulaanbaatar capital city
1986 – centralized, with 15 branches
1991 – new branch library in Ulaanbaatar city west district
1992 - only 4 branches left, others closed by economic crisis
1998 – Alice software for Library automation by AusAID grant
1999 – Internet connection by CanadaIDRC and ISP Datacom
2003 – Library borrower card replaced by Alice fingerprint recognition module
2004 – American Corner established with cooperation American Embassy
2005 – Braille book center with cooperation National Federation for the Blind
2008 – Service environment shifted to open stacks
2010 – DAISY technology implementation to Braille book center
2011 – Open source, web based Koha LIS implementation with support KOICA
2011 – 1-5 grade pupils are free on borrower registration and home loan
service

 Since June 2011 : Open source Koha LIS

 UNICODE supported
 now using borrower registration, cataloguing and OPAC functions
 planning to use circulation and reporting functions
 No library software implementation at 4 branches

reasons, have challenges using regular printed media. DAISY
digital talking books offer the benefits of regular
audiobooks, but they are superior because DAISY includes

 2010 - established studio room at UPL to produce Mongolian
DAISY books by grant EIFL-Public Library Innovation Program
 40 BookSense device
 Network with National Federation for the Blinds and
Handicapped agencies and 21 province central libraries of
Mongolia
 Mr. Tsengel Maidar, DAISY Expert, now UPL’s staff to manage
DAISY studio and DAISY books
