 “Archetype means recurrent narratives designs, patterns
of action, character types, themes and images which are
identifiable in a wide variety of works of literature as well
as in myths, dreams and even social rituals.”
 General meaning of Archetypes according to Carl G.
Jung of Dept psychology in “Collective unconscious”:
* Primordial images
* Psychic residue
 James G Frazer Gave theory of Archetype in „The
Golden Bough‟.
Archetypal criticism found in 1934
when Maud Bodkin published Archetypal
Patterns in Poetry.
“Archetypal literary criticism is a type
of critical theory that interprets a text by
focusing on recurring myths and
archetypes in
the narrative, symbols, images, and
character types in literary work.”
 Canadian literary critic.
 “Anatomy of criticism”
 “The Archetypes of Literature”
 Frye to place the modes in a circular structure and
point to the cyclical nature of myth and archetypes. In
this setting, literature represents the natural cycle of
birth, growth, maturity, decline, death, resurrection,
rebirth, and the repetition of the cycle. The remainder
of the chapter deals with the cycle of the four seasons
as embodied by four
mythoi: comedy, romance, tragedy, and irony or satire.
Northrop
Fry’s
Framework
Comedic
comedy Romance
Tragic
Tragedy Satire
Spring
comedy
Summer
romance
Autumn
tragedy
Winter
Satire or
Irony
Seasons
Frye use seasons in archetypal
criticism
•Spring
•Comedy is aligned with spring because the genre of
comedy is characterized by the birth of the hero and
spring is also symbolizes
the defeat of winter and darkness.
•Summer
•Romance is aligned with summer because summer is the
Culmination of life in the seasonal Calendar.
•Autumn
•Tragedy is aligned with autumn because autumn is the
dying stage of the seasonal calendar and also known
For the “ fall ” or demise of the protagonist.
•Winter
•Satire is aligned with winter satire is a “ dark ” genre.
Satire is a disillusioned and mocking form of three other genre.
Comedic Human world is representative of
wish-fulfillment and being community
centered.
Tragic Human world is represented
Isolation , Tyranny and the fallen hero.
Animals in the comedic genres are docile
and pastoral.
For example…Sheep.
 Animals are predatory and hunters in
tragic.
 For example…Wolves.
Vegetation is also represented by gardens,
parks, roses and lotuses as comic.
Vegetation is of wild forest or as being
barren as tragic.
comedic mineral realm represent by Cities
and temples and precious stones.
 tragic mineral realm represent by desert
ruins.
The water realm is represented by rivers in
the comedic. Water is the symbol of life.
 The seas and floods represent tragic.
The hero
The courageous man who always running
in and saving the day.
For Example…Hamlet, Macbeth.
 The outcast
 He or she has been cast out of Society
and also be considered as Christ figure.
For Examples…Pandvas, Rosalind in “ As
You Like it. “
The Scapegoat
 The scapegoat figure is the one who gets
blamed for everything and in the end he or
she prove true.
Femme Fatale
Who is considered responsible for the fall of
man. The Bible tell the story.
For Examples….Eve. Draupadi is responsible
Mahabharata. Another is Sita and
Surparnakha.
The Star-Crossed Lovers
This is the young couple joined by love but
unexpectedly parted by fate.
For Examples…William Shakespeare’s
“ Romeo and Juliet ”
Thus archetypal criticism deals with Myth
and Rules and Regulations and also deals
with old age. Archetypal Criticism also
include various season’s and symbols of
nature thus we can say that Archetypal
Criticism is depend on Nature. Archetypal
Criticism is criticized season’s and symbol
so we can say that archetypal criticism is
one type of critical theory.
