1. IDEA MENA
Communications Manager
IDEA Middle East & North Africa is seeking to appoint a Communications Manager responsible for
coordinating and implementing internal and external communications for IDEA MENA.
The Communications Manager will promote the IDEA MENA’s activities to external audiences,
including debaters, teachers, students, news organisations and potential funders and will enable all
staff within the network to be kept up to date with activities occurring across the organisation.
Reporting to the Executive Director, IDEA MENA (based in Tunis, Tunisia) the Communications
Manager will ensure the highest standards in the delivery of IDEA’s communications tools, by
providing excellent project management skills, drafting and editing, clear analysis and effective
communications.

What we do
• Provide debate training for teachers and young people;

o Information to support the establishment of debate clubs and activities;
o A comprehensive guide to debating events and activities worldwide;
o Websites in English, Dutch, Spanish, Arabic and Russian.
Our network
IDEA is a network co-ordinated by a central office in Brussels and we have offices in the UK,
Netherlands, Macedonia, USA, Central Asia (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan) and MENA (Tunis, Tunisia). We
operate with a network of partner organisations across 60 countries.
3. Post: Communications Manager
Contract: Temporary (One Year)
Working hours: Full-time, 38 per week, Monday to Friday. There will be occasional out of hours
working to support events and travel.
Reporting to: Executive Director, IDEA MENA
Location: Tunis, Tunisia
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Expected start date: July 2014
The successful applicant will already have the right to work in Tunisia.
Areas of responsibility
• Provide on-going advice on external and internal communications strategy including online
and offline elements
External communications
• Develop a communication strategy (including media plan and digital plan) for IDEA MENA
• Ensure the implementation of the brand guidelines within all IDEA MENA activities
• Develop communications content: draft and/or edit press releases, fact sheets, policy
positioning statements, the IDEA MENA email newsletter, video messages and other
materials;
• Draft, edit and/or assist in the regular updating of the IDEA Arabic website and social media
content in Arabic language;
• Develop communications materials for the IDEA MENA’s programmes, projects and events.
• Communicate to external audiences IDEA’s programs, projects, achievements and initiatives;
• Maintain a plan of communications activity to support IDEA’s events and activities to include
press releases, reports, and other publications;
Internal communications
• Develop communications content for IDEA’s internal communications newsletter
• Build on IDEA’s strategy for improving IDEA’s internal communication including developing
shared practices, processes and systems
• Standardise the use of IDEA’s visual identity and brand across the organisation and ensure
staff education about this subject
Project management
• Manage and develop IDEA’s Debatabase on the Arabic website
• Manage on-going audience research activities
• Manage the communications budget efficiently and effectively
Other
• Contribute to the development of the IDEA MENA’s business strategy
• Organize planned and ad hoc external events and meetings;
• Monitor and provide accurate assessment of developments in the debate community and of
advocacy opportunities; maintain good relations with both IDEA’s staff and external contacts
(including journalists, researchers and governmental and inter-governmental
representatives);
4. • Work closely with the Executive Director to liaise with supporters, sponsors and donors
and support fundraising and programme activity where required

Person specification
• University degree in communications, public relations, or a related field;
• Proven experience of working in a communications environment;
• Experience of working in an international environment;
• Strong native-level Arabic language writing, editing and speaking skills required; Excellent
English is also required
• Excellent organisation, planning and problem solving skills with the ability to work
flexibly to meet the requirements of the role;
• Experience of managing marketing communications projects and budgets effectively;
• Experience in drafting and editing communications materials for a variety of audiences;
• Ability to cultivate contacts and develop networks;
• Knowledge of social media and proven track record in community development;
• Strong team player; collaborative approach with proven ability to work in a diverse team;
able to work independently;
• Self-motivated with the ability to generate ideas and stimulate discussion both with
colleagues and external contacts;
• Diplomacy and people management skills;
• Willingness to travel internationally;
