Nuclear Power Plants
Nuclear generators use nuclear fission to turn
water into steam. This drives the steam
turbine, which spins a generator to produce
power. A pound of highly enriched uranium
can power a nuclear submarine or nuclear
aircraft carrier and is equal to something on
the order of a million gallons of gasoline.

Nuclear Power is…
Safe and Secure
Safety is the TOP Priority of the U.S. Nuclear
Industry. Their obligation is to take every
precaution to protect the health and safety of
their employees, the public, and the
 environment.
Nuclear energy is secure*. In 2002, a 2 day national security
simulation in Washington, D.C., was conducted by the Center
for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and concluded
nuclear plants ―are probably our best defended targets,‖ with
the industry spending $1.2 billion in security since September
11, 2001.

*The NRC holds Nuclear
Power Plants to the
HIGHEST security
standards of ANY
American Industry.
Clean
Nuclear energy is an environmentally clean option
to produce electricity. It produces no harmful
greenhouse gases suspected to cause global
warming, and no gases that could cause ground-
level ozone formation, smog, or acid rain.
Emission-Free
Nuclear power already accounts for 73%
of the nation’s emission-free electricity.

Alternative renewable energy sources are
important, but can only take us so far.
Wind and solar can be unreliable and
geothermal power isn’t well-suited for all
locations.

The other major sources of emission-free
electricity provided in the U.S. are:
     hydroelectric plants –6.6%
     wind energy – 0.4%
     solar energy –0.01%.
Affordable and Reliable

Rising energy costs is a concern
for every American. Nuclear Nuclear power has the lowest

           electricity.

Nuclear plants are one of the
                   most reliable sources on the
                  electricity grid, and their costs
                    are more predictable than
                    many other energy sources.
Innovative

Nuclear Technology improves the quality
of life for Americans: Many nations around the world
                                                   depend on nuclear energy today.
• America was one of the first countries to
realize the benefits of nuclear energy. We are
                                                   • In 2005, a total of 16 countries relied
on the cutting edge of innovation. One out of

Types of Nuclear Power Plants
Commercial nuclear power plants in the United States are either boiling
water reactors (BWR) or pressurized water reactors (PWR).

                         Boiling Water Reactors (BWR)
BWRs heat the water surrounding the nuclear fuel directly into
steam in the reactor vessel. Pipes carry steam directly to the
turbine, which drives the electric generator to produce electricity.
Approximately 2/3 of the 104 reactors in the United States are Pressurized
Water Reactors (PWR).

                           Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR)
PWRs heat the water surrounding the nuclear fuel, but keep the water under
pressure to prevent it from boiling.
The hot water is pumped from the reactor vessel to a steam generator.
There, the heat from the water is transferred to a second, separate supply of
water. This water supply boils to make steam.
The steam spins the turbine, which drives the electric generator to produce
     electricity.
Hatch Nuclear Plant (BWR)
     Baxley, GA

Plant Hatch was Georgia’s
first Nuclear powered
electric generating plant.
Construction began in
1968. Unit 1 was
commercially operating in
1975 followed by Unit 2 in
1979.

It has supplied an average
of more than 8% of
Georgia’s total electricity
needs since it began
operating in 1975.
Plant Hatch was
the first BWR in
the United States
to receive NRC
approval for a
new extended
license. This was
done in January
2002 and will
allow them to
operate an
additional 20
years.
Plant Hatch has the capacity to
produce up to 1,848 KW of electric
                    power.
Farley Nuclear Plant (PWR)
   Dothan, AL

Construction began in 1970. Unit
1 achieved commercial operation
in December 1977 and Unit 2 in
July 1981.
The plant is powered by 2
Westinghouse Pressurized Water
Reactors (PWR) and each unit is
capable of generating 888
megawatts (MW) for a total of
1,776 MW.
Farley generates 19% of
Alabama Power’s electricity
Approximately 800 people are needed to operate Plant Farley,
twenty-four hours a day. This includes Engineers, Mechanics,
Control Room Operators, Lab Technicians, I & C Control
Technicians, Electricians, Security Officers, and many others.
Farley uses
approximately 400 of its
1,850 acres to
accommodate 2 reactors,
6 cooling towers, state-
of-the-art control room,
turbine building, low-
voltage and high-voltage
switchyards, training
facilities, and a visitor
center open to tour
groups year-round.
Vogtle Nuclear Plant (PWR)
   Waynesboro, GA

Georgia’s second nuclear
plant planning began in
1971. Unit 1 achieved
commercial operation in
1987, followed by Unit 2
in 1989.

The plant’s 3,100 acre
site along the Savannah
River, became the largest
construction project
EVER in Georgia.
At the peak of construction, more than
14,000 people worked to build the 2
electric generating units at Plant Vogtle.
Plant Vogtle sends millions of Kilowatts of electricity to
destinations all across the region, providing enough
energy to power approximately 600,000 homes, and they
expect the number to increase.

Top 10 facts About Nuclear Energy

#1
There are 104 commercial nuclear power plants producing 20% of all
electricity and over 70% of the emission-free electricity generated in
the United States.

The plants are located at 64 sites in 31 states.
#2
More than 400 nuclear power plants worldwide produce 16% of
the world’s electricity, while reducing CO2 emissions by more
than 2 billion metric tons per year.
#3
                                      Nuclear energy supplies
electricity each year to serve 60
                                      million homes.

#4
Nuclear energy has one of the
lowest environmental impacts of any
electricity source.

For example, a wind farm would
need 235 square miles to produce
the same amount of electricity as a
1,000-megawatt nuclear power plant.
#5
Nuclear energy is by far the
                                             nation’s largest source of
                                             electricity that does not emit
                                             any controlled air pollutants. It
                                             provides 73% of the electricity
                                             from all carbon-free
                                             sources, including
                                             hydroelectric, wind and solar.

#6
Nuclear power plants provide low-cost, predictable
power at stable prices, and are essential in
maintaining the reliability of the U.S. electric power
system.
#7
Nuclear power plants are able to produce an abundant and low cost
energy source because they use an enriched form of uranium for fuel.
#8
The economic activity of a U.S. nuclear plant generates, on
average, around $20 million in state and local tax revenues.

#9
You would have to live near a nuclear power plant for over
2,000 years to get the same amount of radiation exposure that
you get from a single diagnostic medical x-ray.
#10
There are nearly 100 different nuclear medicine imaging procedures
available today. An estimated 10 to 12 million nuclear medicine imaging
and therapeutic procedures are performed each year in the United States.

  • 7. Nuclear Power Plants Nuclear generators use nuclear fission to turn water into steam. This drives the steam turbine, which spins a generator to produce power. A pound of highly enriched uranium can power a nuclear submarine or nuclear aircraft carrier and is equal to something on the order of a million gallons of gasoline.

  • 9. Nuclear Power is… Safe and Secure Safety is the TOP Priority of the U.S. Nuclear Industry. Their obligation is to take every precaution to protect the health and safety of their employees, the public, and the environment.
  • 10. Nuclear energy is secure*. In 2002, a 2 day national security simulation in Washington, D.C., was conducted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and concluded nuclear plants ―are probably our best defended targets,‖ with the industry spending $1.2 billion in security since September 11, 2001. *The NRC holds Nuclear Power Plants to the HIGHEST security standards of ANY American Industry.
  • 11. Clean Nuclear energy is an environmentally clean option to produce electricity. It produces no harmful greenhouse gases suspected to cause global warming, and no gases that could cause ground- level ozone formation, smog, or acid rain.
  • 12. Emission-Free Nuclear power already accounts for 73% of the nation’s emission-free electricity. Alternative renewable energy sources are important, but can only take us so far. Wind and solar can be unreliable and geothermal power isn’t well-suited for all locations. The other major sources of emission-free electricity provided in the U.S. are: hydroelectric plants –6.6% wind energy – 0.4% solar energy –0.01%.
  • 13. Affordable and Reliable Rising energy costs is a concern for every American. Nuclear Nuclear power has the lowest energy is an affordable and production cost of the major reliable economic choice for sources of electricity. electricity. Nuclear plants are one of the most reliable sources on the electricity grid, and their costs are more predictable than many other energy sources.
  • 14. Innovative Nuclear Technology improves the quality of life for Americans: Many nations around the world depend on nuclear energy today. • America was one of the first countries to realize the benefits of nuclear energy. We are • In 2005, a total of 16 countries relied on the cutting edge of innovation. It holds promise as a reliable means of producing potable water from seawater; a process known as desalination.
  • 15. Trivis staffing is technically qualified to pave your pathway of power  We have a variety of Power Generation Clients…  We can connect you with “Big” utilities….
  • 16. Types of Nuclear Power Plants Commercial nuclear power plants in the United States are either boiling water reactors (BWR) or pressurized water reactors (PWR). Boiling Water Reactors (BWR) BWRs heat the water surrounding the nuclear fuel directly into steam in the reactor vessel. Pipes carry steam directly to the turbine, which drives the electric generator to produce electricity.
  • 17. Approximately 2/3 of the 104 reactors in the United States are Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR). Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) PWRs heat the water surrounding the nuclear fuel, but keep the water under pressure to prevent it from boiling. The hot water is pumped from the reactor vessel to a steam generator. There, the heat from the water is transferred to a second, separate supply of water. This water supply boils to make steam. The steam spins the turbine, which drives the electric generator to produce electricity.
  • 18. Hatch Nuclear Plant (BWR) Baxley, GA Plant Hatch was Georgia’s first Nuclear powered electric generating plant. Construction began in 1968. Unit 1 was commercially operating in 1975 followed by Unit 2 in 1979. It has supplied an average of more than 8% of Georgia’s total electricity needs since it began operating in 1975.
  • 19. Plant Hatch was the first BWR in the United States to receive NRC approval for a new extended license. This was done in January 2002 and will allow them to operate an additional 20 years. Plant Hatch has the capacity to produce up to 1,848 KW of electric power.
  • 20. Farley Nuclear Plant (PWR) Dothan, AL Construction began in 1970. Unit 1 achieved commercial operation in December 1977 and Unit 2 in July 1981. The plant is powered by 2 Westinghouse Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) and each unit is capable of generating 888 megawatts (MW) for a total of 1,776 MW. Farley generates 19% of Alabama Power’s electricity
  • 21. Approximately 800 people are needed to operate Plant Farley, twenty-four hours a day. This includes Engineers, Mechanics, Control Room Operators, Lab Technicians, I & C Control Technicians, Electricians, Security Officers, and many others. Farley uses approximately 400 of its 1,850 acres to accommodate 2 reactors, 6 cooling towers, state- of-the-art control room, turbine building, low- voltage and high-voltage switchyards, training facilities, and a visitor center open to tour groups year-round.
  • 22. Vogtle Nuclear Plant (PWR) Waynesboro, GA Georgia’s second nuclear plant planning began in 1971. Unit 1 achieved commercial operation in 1987, followed by Unit 2 in 1989. The plant’s 3,100 acre site along the Savannah River, became the largest construction project EVER in Georgia. At the peak of construction, more than 14,000 people worked to build the 2 electric generating units at Plant Vogtle.
  • 23. Plant Vogtle sends millions of Kilowatts of electricity to destinations all across the region, providing enough energy to power approximately 600,000 homes, and they expect the number to increase.
  • 24. Introducing the AP1000 The Newest Nuclear Plant Currently under Construction • Fuel Handling Area 1 • Concrete Shield Building 2 • Steel Containment 3 • Passive Containment Cooling Water Tank 4 • Steam Generator 5 • Reactor Coolant Pumps 6 • Reactor Vessel 7 • Integrated Heat Package 8 • Pressurizer 9 10 • Main Control Room 11 • Feedwater Pumps 12 • Turbine Generators
  • 25. Top 10 facts About Nuclear Energy #1 There are 104 commercial nuclear power plants producing 20% of all electricity and over 70% of the emission-free electricity generated in the United States. The plants are located at 64 sites in 31 states.
  • 26. #2 More than 400 nuclear power plants worldwide produce 16% of the world’s electricity, while reducing CO2 emissions by more than 2 billion metric tons per year.
  • 27. #3 Nuclear energy supplies electricity each year to serve 60 million homes. #4 Nuclear energy has one of the lowest environmental impacts of any electricity source. For example, a wind farm would need 235 square miles to produce the same amount of electricity as a 1,000-megawatt nuclear power plant.
  • 28. #5 Nuclear energy is by far the nation’s largest source of electricity that does not emit any controlled air pollutants. It provides 73% of the electricity from all carbon-free sources, including hydroelectric, wind and solar. #6 Nuclear power plants provide low-cost, predictable power at stable prices, and are essential in maintaining the reliability of the U.S. electric power system.
  • 29. #7 Nuclear power plants are able to produce an abundant and low cost energy source because they use an enriched form of uranium for fuel.
  • 30. #8 The economic activity of a U.S. nuclear plant generates, on average, around $20 million in state and local tax revenues. #9 You would have to live near a nuclear power plant for over 2,000 years to get the same amount of radiation exposure that you get from a single diagnostic medical x-ray.
  • 31. #10 There are nearly 100 different nuclear medicine imaging procedures available today. An estimated 10 to 12 million nuclear medicine imaging and therapeutic procedures are performed each year in the United States.
