INTRODUCTION

Bibliometrics is the quantitative evaluation of scientific literature1. Scientific
productivity is influenced by a large number of factors, including individual
characteristics such as age, gender, psychological traits, and educational background, as
well as structural features like funding, institutional context, and the organization of the
actual research2-4. Bibliometric analysis is used in the science and technology policy
arena to determine the knowledge outputs of the national systems of innovation5. In view
of the above, it was intended to aim at analysing the scientific productivity of veterinary
sciences in India. The study aims to ascertain the growth of literature and productivity of
authors from the Indian point of view.

DATA SOURCE AND METHODOLOGY

The data were retrieved from the ISI Web of Science database – Science Citation
Index Expanded (SCIE). The search strategy for general search of veterinary science
literature was as follows:

Topic= veterinary      science;   DocType=All      documents;    Time    Span=1999-2011;
Address=India.

Thus, A total of 5468 publications of two types namely journal articles (5418) and
conference proceedings (50). The collected data were analysed using MS-Excel
Spreadsheet and MS-Word.

BIBLIOMETRIC INDICATORS

Degree of Collaboration

To examine the extent of research collaboration among the veterinary scientists in
India, Subramaniam’s6 formula was adopted. It can be statistically proposed as:
                                Nm
                        C=
                              Nm + Ns

Where,
         C = Degree of collaboration
Nm = Number of multiple authored papers
Ns = Number of single authored papers

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The analyses, based on the data collected, were carried out with a view to measure
the growth of literature over the study period, ranking of journals, subfield-wise
distribution of articles in journals, etc.

Annual research output

Table 1 shows the findings of year-wise distribution of total research output of
veterinary science literature in India. It was observed that the veterinary science literature
of India is growing steadily during the period but for 2009 and 2010 when it has come
down. Yet the decreasing trend was observed in the years 2000, 2003, 2009 and 2010.
The study examined totally 5648 research output for a span of 13 years. As a result, the
growth of total research output was increasing gradually, which is accounted from 462 in
1999 to 624 in 2008. However, the trend from 2009 onwards was a reverse as there was a
sudden decrease in 2009 and it continued to remain.

Authorship pattern and degree of collaboration

Table 2 clearly indicates that three authored papers rank first in order sharing
25.46 per cent of the total research output. The four authored papers follow second in
order with 22.07 per cent of the total research contributions followed by two, five, and six
authored contributions sharing 21.74 per cent, 13.3 per cent, and 6.31 per cent of the total
research output during the study period respectively. However, It is interesting to note
that single authored papers occupy sixth position in order witnessing 261 contributions
which represents only 4.77 per cent, on the other hand seven, eight, nine, and ten or more

CONCLUSION

Bibliometrics is a tool to analyse literature and throw light on the literature and
the authors from different points of view. It was observed that the contributions made by
Indian veterinary scientists for a span of 13 years were quite considerable. Out of various
institutions, it was found that Punjab Agricultural University has contributed the
maximum followed closely by Tamil Nadu Veterinary & Animal Science University and
Madras Veterinary College. As far as the individual contributions are concerned Punjab
Agricultural University occupies the first two positions. It is remarkable that only journal
out of 99 journals, ‘Indian Veterinary Journal’ covers about 65 per cent of the total
publications. A unique observation that the Indian contributors to veterinary science
literature have made their research publications in two forms only – journals and
conference proceedings. More such studies could be conducted and brought to light to
help finding areas need improvement.

The data, for 1999 – 2011, used in this study were obtained from the ISI Web of Science database – Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). A total of 5468 publications of two types namely journal articles (5418) and conference proceedings (50). The aim of the paper was to ascertain annual research output, authorship pattern, forms of publications, highly productive authors, subfield wise distribution, and ranking of journals of veterinary science literature in India. Keywords: Bibliometrics, Veterinary Science, Dairy & Animal Science, Marine & Freshwater Biology, Reproductive Biology. 11
  • 2. Journal of Library Science and Information Technology (JLSIT), ISSN: xxxx - xxxx (Print) ISSN: xxxx – xxxx (Online) Volume 1, Issue 1, January - June 2012, © PRJ Publication INTRODUCTION Bibliometrics is the quantitative evaluation of scientific literature1. Scientific productivity is influenced by a large number of factors, including individual characteristics such as age, gender, psychological traits, and educational background, as well as structural features like funding, institutional context, and the organization of the actual research2-4. Bibliometric analysis is used in the science and technology policy arena to determine the knowledge outputs of the national systems of innovation5. In view of the above, it was intended to aim at analysing the scientific productivity of veterinary sciences in India. The study aims to ascertain the growth of literature and productivity of authors from the Indian point of view. DATA SOURCE AND METHODOLOGY The data were retrieved from the ISI Web of Science database – Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). The search strategy for general search of veterinary science literature was as follows: Topic= veterinary science; DocType=All documents; Time Span=1999-2011; Address=India. Thus, A total of 5468 publications of two types namely journal articles (5418) and conference proceedings (50). The collected data were analysed using MS-Excel Spreadsheet and MS-Word. BIBLIOMETRIC INDICATORS Degree of Collaboration To examine the extent of research collaboration among the veterinary scientists in India, Subramaniam’s6 formula was adopted. It can be statistically proposed as: Nm C= Nm + Ns Where, C = Degree of collaboration Nm = Number of multiple authored papers Ns = Number of single authored papers 12
  • 3. Journal of Library Science and Information Technology (JLSIT), ISSN: xxxx - xxxx (Print) ISSN: xxxx – xxxx (Online) Volume 1, Issue 1, January - June 2012, © PRJ Publication RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The analyses, based on the data collected, were carried out with a view to measure the growth of literature over the study period, ranking of journals, subfield-wise distribution of articles in journals, etc. Annual research output Table 1 shows the findings of year-wise distribution of total research output of veterinary science literature in India. It was observed that the veterinary science literature of India is growing steadily during the period but for 2009 and 2010 when it has come down. Yet the decreasing trend was observed in the years 2000, 2003, 2009 and 2010. The study examined totally 5648 research output for a span of 13 years. As a result, the growth of total research output was increasing gradually, which is accounted from 462 in 1999 to 624 in 2008. However, the trend from 2009 onwards was a reverse as there was a sudden decrease in 2009 and it continued to remain. Table 1: Distribution of annual research output of veterinary science literature Year Research Output Percentage Cumulative Percentage 1999 462 8.45 8.45 2000 423 7.74 16.19 2001 454 8.30 24.49 2002 433 7.92 32.41 2003 398 7.28 39.69 2004 446 8.16 47.84 2005 431 7.88 55.73 2006 484 8.85 64.58 2007 594 10.86 75.44 2008 624 11.41 86.85 2009 244 4.46 91.31 2010 258 4.72 96.03 2011 217 3.97 100.00 Total 5468 100.00 Authorship pattern and degree of collaboration Table 2 clearly indicates that three authored papers rank first in order sharing 25.46 per cent of the total research output. The four authored papers follow second in order with 22.07 per cent of the total research contributions followed by two, five, and six authored contributions sharing 21.74 per cent, 13.3 per cent, and 6.31 per cent of the total research output during the study period respectively. However, It is interesting to note that single authored papers occupy sixth position in order witnessing 261 contributions which represents only 4.77 per cent, on the other hand seven, eight, nine, and ten or more 13
  • 4. Journal of Library Science and Information Technology (JLSIT), ISSN: xxxx - xxxx (Print) ISSN: xxxx – xxxx (Online) Volume 1, Issue 1, January - June 2012, © PRJ Publication authored contributions record 2.94%, 1.81 %, 0.84 %, and 0.75 % respectively. An attempt was made to analyse the nature of collaboration among the veterinary science researchers in India. The result of degree of collaboration (0.95) clearly indicates that the research output of veterinary science literature in India is fairly collaborative. Table 2: Authorship pattern Authorship pattern Research Output Percentage Cumulative Percentage 1 261 4.77 4.77 2 1189 21.74 26.51 3 1392 25.46 51.97 4 1207 22.07 74.05 5 727 13.30 87.34 6 345 6.31 93.65 7 161 2.94 96.60 8 99 1.81 98.41 9 46 0.84 99.25 >10 41 0.75 100.00 Total 5468 100.00 Degree of Collaboration 0.95 Source-wise distribution The source wise distribution of research output of veterinary science literature, as can be seen in Table 3, revealed that the journal articles occupy the highest percentage of output yielding 99.09% followed by conference proceedings 0.91%. The ranking of journals based on their productivity has been presented in Table 6. From the result, it is quite surprising that one Indian journal ‘INDIAN VETERINARY JOURNAL’ alone published 3469 articles that share 64.03 per cent of total publications. The remaining journals cover less than 4 per cent. The other ranked journals, which share between 2 and 4 per cent, include VETERINARY PRACTITIONER (3.23%), VETERINARY RESEARCH COMMUNICATIONS (2.92%), TROPICAL ANIMAL HEALTH AND PRODUCTION (2.82%), JOURNAL OF CAMEL PRACTICE AND RESEARCH (2.29%), and FISH & SHELLFISH IMMUNOLOGY (2.07%). The list of journals along with their ranking is reported in Table 6. 17

It was observed that the contributions made by Indian veterinary scientists for a span of 13 years were quite considerable. Out of various institutions, it was found that Punjab Agricultural University has contributed the maximum followed closely by Tamil Nadu Veterinary & Animal Science University and Madras Veterinary College. As far as the individual contributions are concerned Punjab Agricultural University occupies the first two positions. It is remarkable that only journal out of 99 journals, ‘Indian Veterinary Journal’ covers about 65 per cent of the total publications. A unique observation that the Indian contributors to veterinary science literature have made their research publications in two forms only – journals and conference proceedings. More such studies could be conducted and brought to light to help finding areas need improvement. 19
