I360 Weekly digest 4 april 10 to april 2011
1. 4 APRIL- 10 APRIL’11
1. Observe the mouth movements of those who speak English well and try to imitate them. When
you are watching television, observe the mouth movements of the speakers. Repeat what they are
saying, while imitating the accent and rhythm of their speech.
2. Until you learn the correct modulation and rhythm of English, slow your speech down. If you speak
too quickly, and with the wrong intonation and rhythm, native speakers will have a hard time
understanding you. Don't worry about your listener getting impatient with your slow speech -- it is
more important that everything you say be understood.
3. Use the dictionary. Look up the correct pronunciation of words that are hard for you to say. Use
dictionary for the purpose of getting the new words & their meanings.
4. Make a list of frequently used words that you find difficult to pronounce and ask someone who
speaks the language well to pronounce them for you. Record these words listen to them and practice
saying them. Listen and read at the same time.
5. Pronounce the ending of each word. Pay special attention to 'S' and 'ED' endings. This will help you
strengthen the mouth muscles that you use when you speak English.
6. Read aloud in English for 15-20 minutes every day in front of a mirror. This activity will definitely
help you in improving your modulation as well as boost up your confidence well.
7. Record your own voice and listen for pronunciation mistakes. Many people hate to hear the sound
of their voice and avoid listening to themselves speak. However, this is a very important exercise
because doing it will help you become conscious of the mistakes you are making.
8. Be patient. You can change the way you speak but it won't happen overnight. You can change the
way you sound if you are willing to put some effort into it.

2. 1. Dress Sharp
When you don’t look good, it changes the way you carry yourself and interact with other people. Use
this to your advantage by taking care of your personal appearance. In most cases, significant
improvements can be made by bathing and shaving frequently, wearing clean clothes, and being aware
of the latest styles.
2. Good Posture
People with slumped shoulders and lethargic movements display a lack of self confidence. They aren’t
enthusiastic about what they’re doing and they don’t consider themselves important. By practicing
good posture, you’ll automatically feel more confident. Stand up straight, keep your head up, and
lly
make eye contact.
3. Personal Commercial
One of the best ways to build confidence is listening to a motivational speech. Unfortunately,
opportunities to listen to a great speaker are few and far between. You can fill this need by creating a
personal commercial. Write a 30-60 second speech that highlights your strengths and goals. Then
60
recite it in front of the mirror aloud (or inside your head if you prefer) whenever you need a confidence
boost.
4. Compliment other people
When we think negatively about ourselves, we often project that feeling on to others in the form of
insults and gossip. To break this cycle of negativity, get in the habit of praising other people. Refuse to
engage in backstabbing, gossips and make an effort to compliment those around you. In the process,
you’ll become well liked and build self confidence. By looking for the best in others, you indirectly bring
out the best in yourself.
3. 5. Sit in the front row
In schools, offices, and public assemblies around the world, people constantly strive to sit at the back
of the room. Most people prefer the back because they’re afraid of being noticed. This reflects a lack of
self confidence. By deciding to sit in the front row, you can get over this irrational fear and build your
self confidence. You’ll also be more visible to the important people talking from the front of the room.
6. Speak up
During group discussions many people never speak up because they’re afraid that people will judge
them for saying something stupid. This fear isn’t really justified. By making an effort to speak up at
least once in every group discussion, you’ll become a better public speaker, more confident in your
own thoughts, and recognized as a leader by your peers.
7. Work out
Along the same lines as personal appearance, physical fitness has a huge effect on self confidence. If
you’re out of shape, you’ll feel insecure, unattractive, and less energetic. By working out, you improve
your physical appearance, energize yourself, and accomplish something positive. Having the discipline
to work out not only makes you feel better, it creates positive momentum that you can build on the
rest of the day.
