John Stuart Mill John Stuart Mill believed in Individual Rights and Freedoms and that people have the right to speak out. The only limitation of his ideology is whether or not these actions could harm others. He lived in an era where many felt this was a radical idea because these rights were very restricted. “The only freedom which deserves the name is that of Pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as We do not attempt to deprive other of theirs, Or impede their efforts to obtain it…” This is a quote from John Mill, I believe this means that we can pursue our own interests as long as it does not get in others way to pursue theirs. This clearly reflects in his ideology Pierre Elliot Trudeau also believed in Individual Rights and Freedoms. He felt that the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada should be a part of our mainstream. He developed the White Paper, which would abolish treaties and everything else that separated them from other Canadians. But this was not his only reflection of his ideology of Individual Rights and Freedoms, Trudeau once said: “ …Take this thing on Homosexuality. I think the view we take here is that there’s no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation., and I think that, you know, what’s is done in private between adults doesn’t concern the Criminal Code. When is becomes public, this is a different story.” This quote shows his feelings much like John Stuart Mill, he believes that Individual Rights and Freedoms Pierre Elliot Trudeau
John Locke John Locke firmly believed that people are intelligent, reasonably and rational; unlike the rest of society, he no longer thought power rested in the hands of God. Locke believed that the source of power in humans comes from within themselves. This lead to ideology of the importance of government and the role it plays in protecting life, liberty and property. He used reason to try to grasp the truth, and determining the valid functions of institutions will optimize human flourishing for the individual and society both in respect to its material and spiritual welfare. This allows for people to pursue their economic interests when and how they want, ensuring equality amongst the society. John Maynard Keynes developed the idea of developing a better economic system which would decrease the impact of a recession. He realized that when our economy is booming, then the government should spend more money and decrease taxes; but if it is decreasing then they should spend less money and increase taxes. With this idea he realized it would soften the “boom.” I feel this relates to John Locke’s ideology because we have the power to control what is happening in society. If we use the idea optimizing human flourishing for individual and society, as well as Keynes's idea of the government influencing our spending, we then can develop a system that satisfies everyone. Economic Equality John Maynard Keynes
