DESCRIPTION OF VOWELS

VOWELS
• The word vowel comes from the Latin word vocalis,
meaning “”speaking ", because in most languages
words and thus speech are not possible without
vowels.
• There are only five letters used to write vowels in
English. They stand for about 20 vowel sounds in
most English accents

• Vowels form centre of
word and nucleus or peak of
syllable
Ex: table car com - pu- ter
• Vowels are normally made with the air
stream that meets no obstruction in the
mouth, pharyngeal and nasal cavities.
Vowels are always voiced

ɛ:- turn, first, serve,

ʌ - uncle, nut ,bus, but
/eɪ̯/ -day, pay, say,
/aɪ̯/ - sky, buy, cry, tie
/ ɔɪ̯ / - boy, noise, moist
/ ɪə̯ / - pier, hear, near
/ eə̯ / - pair, hair, lair
/ ʊə ̯/ - tour, poor,
/oʊ / - oh, no, so, phone,
low, grow, home,
shoulder
/ɑʊ /- pound ,how, cow,
aloud, now, down
VOWELS: CLASSIFICATION
PURE vs DIPHTHONG , or SHORT and LONG
Ex: bit-beat mat-mate rip-ripe pull-pool we-weed

• All English vowels are divided into long and
short vowels.
• Stress plays a significant role in vowel
duration ( ex. vowel reduction in unstressed
syllables) ( vowel reduction)

• The tongue may move
forward, backward, up, down,
thus changing the quality of
vowels.
When the tongue is in the front part
Of the mouth and the front part of the
tongue is raised to the hard palate
a front vowel is pronounced.

TONGUE POSITION
When the front of the tongue is raised towards the
back part of the hard palate the vowel is called
central

When the tongue is in the back part of
the mouth and the back of it is raised
towards the soft palate

TONGUE POSITION
When the front or the back of the tongue is raised
high towards the palate the vowel is called close.

LIP POSITION
When the lips are drawn together so that the
opening between them is more or less
round the vowel is called
rounded.
They are – [ɔ ɔ : u u:].

• When the lips are in smiling position, the
vowels are called spread.
They are – [ I I: ]

When the lips are not rounded
nor sprea, neutral, they are called
neutral.

BASIC VOWEL RULES
1. If two vowels go walking together, the
first one talks and the second one walks .
Ex: meat soap, fuel.
2. Of there is a silent -e- at the end of a word, the
vowel before it says its name. ( as in alphabet )
Ex: cake, home, fine, ( compare: bit-bite)
3. Contrasting sounds
( minimal pairs)
seat- set meat – met
[ i:] and [ɪ]
sheep – ship eat - it
heat – hit each- itch
ɪ
Lips are in a “smile” position.
Remember to feel tension in
your lips, tongue and jaw.It is a
long sound.
SMILE! when you say [ i:]

tea, sea, easy, please, seal, east
bee, feel, agree, need, tree, eager

Lips are relaxed and
slightly parted.The sound is
short and quick. The lips
should barely move when
you say it!

- Listen and repeat
- listen and underline the correct sound [ i:] or [ɪ]
- Listen and circle/ cross out/ underline the word in each
group that does not contain the vowel [ɪ]:
Ex:

- Read a paragraph and underline the words
containing the sounds [ i:] and [ɪ] .
- Role play using words with these sounds
- Write/ say sentences with the words containing the
sounds [ i:] or [ɪ]

CONTRAST between
[ i:] -[ɪ], [eɪ] - [ɛ], [æ] - [ɑ:]
1. Which word has the same sound? ( circle or underline)

2. Which word has different sound? ( circle or underline)

This sound occurs only in stressed syllables
of words. It does not exit in most languagesIt
is produced with tense tongue muscles.

HOMEWORK
1. In groups of 3-4 make a recording of:
a. CNN news report
b. native speakers of English ( Australian, American, British,
other)
STRATEGY:
• make an audio or video recording( approx. 30 seconds to 1 min
max ) – for class presentation
• Pay attention how the speakers pronounce vowels.
• Transcribe the record (use transcription symbology).
• Identify the vowels
• Describe the vowels according to their characteristcs, and
present in the sheet of paper, with the names of group
participants)
HOMEWORK
• 2. Write exercises to practice VOWEL SOUNDS
( simple and complex).( in groups of 3-4)
Strategy:
• Prepare a class exposition to teach vowels.
• Use two- three examples with simple and two-
three examples with complex vowels
• You may use Power Point, flash cards, pictures,
charts, handouts, etc
• Write real class exercises

  • 2. VOWELS • The word vowel comes from the Latin word vocalis, meaning “”speaking ", because in most languages words and thus speech are not possible without vowels. • There are only five letters used to write vowels in English. They stand for about 20 vowel sounds in most English accents
