Introduction
• Smart Grid requires technological readiness
of the demand side
• Green field installations
• Brownfield cases
• Decision making
– Theoretical approach
– ESCO approach (extensive on-site
measurements)
6. Considerations for upgrade planning
solutions
‣ Automatic investigation of possible trade-offs between energy savings and
user comfort, and identification of largest district improvement potential.
‣ Rapidly tailor decision support, should its purpose or user types slightly
change.
‣ Access to real time information by city authorities and relevant stakeholders.
‣ Automatically incorporate the wishes of citizens into the decision making
process.
‣ The need to provide solutions that are scalable.
‣ The need to fully exploit the potential of achieving energy savings by sharing
multipurpose communication networks among several content providers
‣ The need to increase the cost effectiveness of decisions.

Objective
URB-Grade project seeks to provide a common decision
support tool for retrofitting a district towards a district as a
service facilitating integration of brownfield district with
emerging technologies in urban services.

and Utilities
9. FP7/2007-2013 GA n° 600058
Methodology continued
‣ Understanding the district structure and peculiarities
through District Profiling;
‣ Quantifying the district by measuring district KPIs
(Quantification);
‣ Implementing solutions for district retrofitting (the
District Growth phase) and
‣ Validating successfulness of the retrofitting activity
through assessment of updated district profile and
KPIs defined for selected retrofitting strategy (District
Validation). At the end of validation stage a clear
functional business model is available for the platform
exploitation.

Background
• Data analysis and decision support
– Data is the key for understanding
– Common reference model allowing managing
same data at different levels of the system
within a domain
– integration of cross-domain data in a single
data model
– From data analysis to decision support through
visualisation
11. Pilot Sites
Kalundborg, Denmark
Town of Kalundborg, Denmark
• EV charging stations
• Consumption profiles of
residential homes
Decision Support: Policy decisions to
improve the energy efficiency and use
of renewable energy for residents.
Eibar, Spain
Town of Eibar, Spain
• Current Street Lighting Systems
deployed in Eibar
Decision Support : Deciding which
actions and in which city areas should
be taken to reduce the consumption
without compromising the quality of the
service.
Barcelona, Spain
City of Barcelona, Spain
• The assessment of the street‐shops
consumption profile
Decision Support : Deciding which
actions and in which street‐shops should
be taken to reduce the consumption
without compromising the comfort.
12. FP7/2007-2013 GA n° 600058
URB-Grade Targets
• Heterogeneity of data and multiplicity of data
sources
• streetlight energy efficiency in different types
of urban area
• improving street shops consumption profile
while maintaining comfort levels of citizens
13. FP7/2007-2013 GA n° 600058
End users
• Public Facility Management – to make
decisions on energy saving investments, e.g.
street lighting, schools, hospitals, etc.
• Private Facility Policy Support – to make
decisions about policies and awareness
campaigns, e.g. electric appliances trade-in-
plan, home improvement or renewable energy
micro-grid subsidies, etc., and who to target,
e.g. entrepreneurs, residential, commercial or
industrial areas, etc.
14. FP7/2007-2013 GA n° 600058
Conceptual architecture and Implementation process
•What vs. How
• End-user requirements
• Technical requirements
•Definition of District profile
•Definition of KPIs
Technical approach based on
standard open source tools and state-
of the art technologies
16. FP7/2007-2013 GA n° 600058
Conclusions
•The brownfield areas face a challenge of providing the required technological
capabilities for the integration with emerging energy systems.
•The generality of the approach at the district definition level is ensured
through introduction of the notion of district profile, which contains the district
parameters, and the KPIs of interest
•From the technological perspective the generality is provided through use of
open ICT standards for implementation.
