Experience from a pilot phase
The 5th
All Africa Conference on Animal
Agriculture and 18th
ESAP Annual Conference
October 25 – 28, 2010
3. 3
I. Introduction
• Despite its huge livestock population, Ethiopia could
not properly utilize the potential of the livestock sector
• Lack of systematic collection, compilation, analysis,
storage and dissemination of market information is one
of the major constraints
• The economic contribution of the Ethiopian livestock
sector can be improved substantially if the sector is
better integrated into the local and international markets
using available information technologies and other
associated products
• Thus, it is essential to establish a well integrated,
dynamic and interactive database that will enable users
to get easy access to the required market information
4. 4
Overall:
• Avail a comprehensive and dynamic Livestock
Market Information System (LMIS) for Ethiopia
Specific:
• Develop suitable data collection formats,
• Determine the required number of market
managers per market,
• Develop and test the livestock market information
database and build up user friendly output
generation system
• Use other timely information dissemination means
