Moodle 2: Learning platform refresh
         Five practical reasons for change*
                                    change
               (*based on feedback from academic staff at RHUL)
Moving topics/weeks

 • In our previous version of Moodle (1.9) moving topics/weeks around was a 
   cumbersome and repetitive process
 • In Moodle 2 this is a simple ‘drag‐and‐drop’ action
 • Courses can now be reorganised in a matter of seconds
 • This reduces the time spent editing and delivering a course
Duplicating activities

 • There was previously no easy way of copying activities or labels in Moodle
 • Now all Moodle activities have a ‘duplicate’ button and can be copied 
   quickly
 • This supports one‐click duplication of quiz containers in support of students 
   with declared SENs
 • Painstakingly formatted resources/activities such as labels or wikis can be 
   easily copied and redeployed
Conditional release

 • Previously, Moodle resources & activities were either viewable or hidden
 • Access to activities can now be restricted or released according to:
   • date/time
   • completion of and/or grades achieved in previous activities
 • This can increase engagement, support personalised learning paths, and 
   improve the presentation of courses
File management

 • Previously, presenting a file was a three‐step process
 • Uploading a file to a Moodle course has been much simplified:
   • far fewer mouse clicks are required
   • files are uploaded direct to the week/topic
   • no file manager interface to negotiate
   • no risk of broken links
Image handling

 • The image upload process is much improved in 
  Moodle 2
 • The image handling interface:
   • is now consistent with other Moodle tools
   • supports quick and proportionate resizing of 
    images
   • simplifies other formatting, e.g., borders, 
    white space, alignment
 • This streamlines the presentation, editing and 
  management of course‐enhancing images

Moving topics/weeks • In our previous version of Moodle (1.9) moving topics/weeks around was a  cumbersome and repetitive process • In Moodle 2 this is a simple ‘drag‐and‐drop’ action • Courses can now be reorganised in a matter of seconds • This reduces the time spent editing and delivering a course

Duplicating activities • There was previously no easy way of copying activities or labels in Moodle • Now all Moodle activities have a ‘duplicate’ button and can be copied  quickly • This supports one‐click duplication of quiz containers in support of students  with declared SENs • Painstakingly formatted resources/activities such as labels or wikis can be  easily copied and redeployed

Conditional release • Previously, Moodle resources & activities were either viewable or hidden • Access to activities can now be restricted or released according to: • date/time • completion of and/or grades achieved in previous activities • This can increase engagement, support personalised learning paths, and  improve the presentation of courses
  • 5. File management • Previously, presenting a file was a three‐step process • Uploading a file to a Moodle course has been much simplified: • far fewer mouse clicks are required • files are uploaded direct to the week/topic • no file manager interface to negotiate • no risk of broken links

Image handling • The image upload process is much improved in  Moodle 2 • The image handling interface: • is now consistent with other Moodle tools • supports quick and proportionate resizing of  images • simplifies other formatting, e.g., borders,  white space, alignment • This streamlines the presentation, editing and  management of course‐enhancing images f h
