The importance of animation has grown enormously in
recent years.
Task: make a list of different areas of the media where
animation is used.

7. Animation in recent years
Your list should reflect how animation is now shown
through the internet and mobile phones. It is used in
music videos and advertising as well as on television
and in films.
Stop motion animation is used in a wide range of
programmes aimed at children as well.

This task will form part of your 1st assessed coursework

You need to find out about the following pioneers:

 William Horner (Zoetrope)
 Emile Muybridge
 Edison (Kinetoscope)
 Lumiere brothers

10. Instructions
Create a power point presentation entitled:
Pioneers of Stop Motion Animation
Dedicate a slide to each of the pioneers on the list and for
each one find out as much as you can about them using
the following questions as a guide:
1. Who are they?
2. What are they famous for?
3. What equipment did they invent/develop/use?
4. What were the pros and cons of their methods?
Add relevant images to illustrate your presentation.

11. Setting Up a Blog
 All of the work that you do for this unit will be published in
an online blog
 To set up your blog you need to use your school email
address and I will provide you with a password. You cannot
use your own personal emails or have private passwords
as I need to be able to access the blogs and have the
information saved in case you lose or forget it
 I will also provide you with a username and blog title

12. Blog posts
 Firstly, post the examples you found of stop motion
in different media
 Then, upload your Pioneers power point
presentation onto Slideshare and link it to your blog.
These will form the first 2 parts of your first assessed
assignment.

You have to show that you understand the techniques of stop motion
animation
You need to research the following techniques:
 Persistence of vision
 Stop-frame
 Frame rates
1. Explain what they are and how they are used
2. Add examples of them
3. Add relevant illustrations/images
If you find any other techniques, add these to your presentation as well.

Research and write about key figures in contemporary
stop motion work
You must do the following:
 The Brothers Quay
 Tim Burton
 Aardman Animations
 But again, you can add some of your own too.

16. Note about presenting work
I have suggested that you should do these as power
point presentations, however, it is your blog and if you
would prefer to present them in a different way, for
example as separate blog posts with screen grabs,
images and links, that is absolutely fine.
You will be marked on the quality of research that you
do and the depth of understanding that you show
about the techniques, and development of stop motion
from it’s origins to the present day.
