3. 3
2 Samuel 21 1a Then there was a famine in the
days of David three years, year after year; and
David enquired of the LORD.
When you are having trouble, ask God why.
It may be that sin
has you bound.
4. 4
1b And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for
his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.
Saul was trying to get rid
of a potential enemy, but
he broke a covenant
made in the Name of God.
5. 5
Way back when Israel was entering the Promised
Land, God was giving them victory after victory.
The Gibeonites didn’t want to fight a losing battle,
so they sought a covenant with Israel, which God
had forbidden with any near neighbors in the land.
6. 6
They pretended to have traveled from afar with
worn out shoes, moldy bread, and old wineskins.
Joshua 9:14 And the men took of their victuals, and
asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.
Joshua made a covenant, promising not to harm them.
Then they learned that they were near neighbors.
Too late.
Saul broke the covenant, and God is
punishing Israel.
7. 7
Beware the tricks and traps of devils.
2 Timothy 2 24 And the servant of the Lord must
not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach,
patient, 25 In meekness instructing those that
oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give
them repentance to the acknowledging of the Truth;
26 And that they may recover themselves out of the
snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at
his will.
8. 8
Joshua and the Israelites fell for the trick of these
devils, because they did not talk to God.
They trusted what they saw with their
eyes and heard with their ears, using
their rational mind to make a decision.
Trust God and God alone.
9. 9
2 And the king called the
Gibeonites, and said unto
them; (now the Gibeonites
were not of the children of
Israel, but of the remnant of
the Amorites; and the children
of Israel had sworn unto them:
and Saul sought to slay them
in his zeal to the children of
Israel and Judah.)
Saul ignored
the
covenant.
10. 10
3 Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What
shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the
atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the
LORD? 4 And the Gibeonites said unto him, We
will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his
house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in
Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do
for you.
Money can’t fix everything.
They didn’t want money or revenge.
11. 11
5 And they answered the king, The man that
consumed us, and that devised against us that we
should be destroyed from remaining in any of the
coasts of Israel, 6 Let seven men of his sons be
delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto
the LORD in Gibeah of Saul, whom the LORD did
choose. And the king said, I will give them.
This was not their doing.
12. 12
7 But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of
Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD'S
oath (the covenant) that was between them,
between David and Jonathan the son of Saul. 8 But
the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter
of Aiah, whom she bare unto Saul, Armoni and
Mephibosheth; and the five sons of Michal
(Merab) the daughter of Saul, whom she brought
up for Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite:
The Bible tells us that Michal was childless
because she made fun of David for dancing in
worship unto the Lord.
13. 13
9 And he delivered them into the hands of the
Gibeonites, and they hanged them in the hill before
the LORD: and they fell all seven together, and
were put to death in the days of harvest, in the first
days, in the beginning of barley harvest.
March - April
14. 14
10 And Rizpah (one of Saul’s
concubines and mother of 2 of
the men killed) the daughter
of Aiah took sackcloth, and
spread it for her upon the
rock, from the beginning of
harvest until water dropped
upon them out of heaven,
and suffered neither the
birds of the air to rest on
them by day, nor the beasts
of the field by night.
When the rains came
the curse was over.
15. 15
Covenant breaking is serious business.
Numbers 30 2 If a man vow a vow unto the LORD,
or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he
shall not break his word, he shall do according to
all that proceedeth out of his mouth.
Saul broke a covenant that Joshua had made
hundreds of years earlier:
God stopped the rain during
David’s reign.
16. 16
Don’ts we have seen today.
Don’t make vows that you won’t keep.
Don’t break vows after you have made them.
Don’t do anything without
knowing God’s Will.
Joshua made a covenant with the Gibeonites
without praying about it.
He got tricked!
17. 17
Good News!
Psalm 4:3 (NIV) Know that the LORD has set
apart the godly for Himself; the LORD will hear
when I call to Him.
Psalm 34 17 The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth,
and delivereth them out of all their troubles. 18 The
LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart;
and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. 19 Many
are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD
delivereth him out of them all.
18. 18
The Good News is this:
No matter how we got into troubles, the
Lord will deliver us when we cry unto Him in
genuine sorrow for our sins and repent.
To repent is to turn from
sin unto righteousness.
