39. Thiazides-
• Like other diuretics they also excrete Na+ &
water which lowers blood pressure initially
• Long term antihypertensive action is due to
vasodilation

40. DRUG THERAPY
• Thiazides - first choice drugs in HTN unless
contra-indicated
• BP may not be controlled by single drug due
to activation of compensatory mechanism
