Concept and Nature of
Counseling
Difference between guidance and
counseling
 Both Guidance and Counseling are process used to

solve problems of life.
 The basic difference is in the approach. In the
process of guidance, the client's problems are
listened carefully and readymade solutions are
provided by the expert
 where as in the process of counseling the client's

problems are discussed and relevant information are
provided in-between. In the end of the counseling
process, the client himself/herself have a insight to
the problem and he/she become empowered to take
own decision.
Meaning of counseling
Counseling is a method of guidance of an
individual. It helps the client to grow to a greater
maturity by allowing the individuals to take
responsibilities and to make their own decisions.
Concept of counseling
1. Counseling is a relationship between two people
where one person attempts to assist the other to
organize himself better to attain a form of
happiness by adjusting to the situation.
2. The relationship between the counselor and the
client helps to openly discuss the problem faced by
the client. This helps to increase the skills, courage
and self confidence in the client and creates a new
behavior in the client.
3. New methods are explored to identify solutions
for the perceived problem faced by the client.
Sometimes, the client may not find a solution, but
the thought of being able to share the problem with
another person itself can give a satisfaction to the
client.
4. Counseling also helps to develop a set of goals
for future behavior of an individual (Client).
Nature of counseling
 help someone understand their problems

and concerns from a psychological standpoint
 process thoughts and feelings from past
experiences that impact the present
 understand how life context and external
stressors impact current functioning
 connect with their personal strengths and intuition
 develop a plan for healing / change
 assist with developing more effective methods of

coping and managing life on a daily basis
 help someone learn to use effective strategies to
prevent return to unhealthy behaviors or
ineffective coping strategies
 When counseling is successful, a person should

feel better able to face life's challenges using more
healthy and effective coping mechanisms.
 Counseling is a Collaborative Process.
 Effective counseling is conducted with continuing
input from the client. Once we evaluate presenting
problems, we work with the client and give
prioritizes individual needs and outlines strategies
to meet goals.
