- What you see here is the evolution of server virtualization over the years. Customer such as City of San Diego, City of Boston are driving towards 100% virtualization of their data center. Server virtualization has evolved in the last 3-4 years – in 2005 the focus was server consolidation, saving on CAPEX which included heating, cooling, hardware, real estate space etc. Most of the virtualization used cases were test /dev, DR/BC. In 2009, we are seeing more mature enterprises take it a step further introducing virtualization in production environment – virutalizing mission critical applications like exchange etc. The focus here is having an integrated P+V, enabling VM mobility leading to operational savings. In the next couple of years IT teams would have achieved near 100% virtualization, their data center is ready to deliver “IT as a Service” and ready to leverage cloud infrastructure.
- No questions that virtualization management is carving a niche for itself – the analyst community for the 1 st time have begun tracking vendor revenues – they expect the greatest growth in 2009-2010, a CAGR of 22.5%. Several studies have been commissioned by the analyst community and what they found was large scale implementations with >50 VMs to be the management tipping point when compared to smaller implementations – when virtual sprawl becomes untamed. We are also seeing an expansion in the used cases for virtualization – from test /dev to production workloads as mentioned in the previous slide. It is expected that in the next 2-3yrs this will grow to 50%.
- Reiterating what we saw in previous slides – the evolution of virtualization adoption from limited to extensive production. Point management tools are “good enough” to a certain point (i,e homogenous environment, servicing internal customers) but when are dealing with customer facing applications /infrastructure in production environment, you need an enterprise class player like CA that gives you that visibility into P+V environments across networks, systems and databases – MGM is a perfect example!

- CA solutions use automation and management to contain virtual sprawl - #1 challenge in a virtual environment that inhibits broader footprint
- A key focus area where CA shines – performance not just for networks but for systems, databases and applications CA is able to proactively take action on degradation of performance before it is flagged as an issue.
- Another key aspect is enabling customers to be agile - deliver faster TTV IT services to meet business priorities. 1. We do it using a self service provisioning model to provision & de-provision systems (both P or V). 2. Ability to pinpoint root cause and take corrective action with manual intervention is huge for our customers and we extend this into virtual environments -> suppress symptomatic alarms on virtual machines
- So you have seen how CA’s enables customers to adopt virtualization with confidence – more so in their production environment. To summarize key challenges your customers face include: virtual sprawl, performance degradation, RCA, security and how CA solutions address each of these key areas.
- We have so far discussed key challenges and capabilities you need to address this growing need to integrate your P+V virtual environments. Let’s now discuss what these CA solutions are that will get you there. You are familiar with our tools on the Assurance side for systems and networks. I’d like to take a moment to introduce you to our virtualization option that works with these managers.
