CONCEPT OF TRADE UNION
Trade union is:-
 It is a association of wage earners or employees;
 Whose principle purpose is to regulate the relations
  between workers and employers;
 whose leader is elected for the interests of the
  employees within the workplace; and
 recognized for collective bargaining.
Functions Of Trade Union
Protective Functions-
 These functions include protecting the worker’s
  interests.
 Bargain on issues like hike in wages, providing more
  benefits or job security etc.

• Fraternal functions-
 These functions include providing financial and non-
  financial assistance to workers during the periods of
  strikes and lockouts.
 Issues like medical facilities during slackness,
  provision of education, recreational and housing
  facilities, provision of social and religious benefits, etc.
Political Functions-
These functions include affiliating the union to a
 political party,
Helping the political party in collecting donations,
Seeking the help of political parties during the
 periods of strikes and lock-outs.
• Social functions-
These functions include carrying out social
 activities, discharging social responsibilities
 through various sections of the society like
 educating the customers etc.

 Employee-employer relations
 welfare
 Safeguarding organizational health
KINDS OF TRADE UNION
 Craft of skills union : To represent skilled
  workers.
 Industrial unions : To represent the members of
  one particular industry.
 General unions : Unions which recruit workers
  from all types of industries and with any level or
  range of skills e.g. – the Manufacturing Science
  and Finance Union.
 White-collar unions : Represent office workers.

  • 2. CONCEPT OF TRADE UNION Trade union is:-  It is a association of wage earners or employees;  Whose principle purpose is to regulate the relations between workers and employers;  whose leader is elected for the interests of the employees within the workplace; and  recognized for collective bargaining.
  • 4. Protective Functions-  These functions include protecting the worker’s interests.  Bargain on issues like hike in wages, providing more benefits or job security etc. • Fraternal functions-  These functions include providing financial and non- financial assistance to workers during the periods of strikes and lockouts.  Issues like medical facilities during slackness, provision of education, recreational and housing facilities, provision of social and religious benefits, etc.
  • 5. Political Functions- These functions include affiliating the union to a political party, Helping the political party in collecting donations, Seeking the help of political parties during the periods of strikes and lock-outs. • Social functions- These functions include carrying out social activities, discharging social responsibilities through various sections of the society like educating the customers etc.
  • 7.  Wages and salaries  Working conditions  Discipline  Employee-employer relations  welfare  Safeguarding organizational health
  • 9.  Craft of skills union : To represent skilled workers.  Industrial unions : To represent the members of one particular industry.  General unions : Unions which recruit workers from all types of industries and with any level or range of skills e.g. – the Manufacturing Science and Finance Union.  White-collar unions : Represent office workers.
