Twitter: the modern Left Bank?
“It is agreeable, because you can hear all the
people swarming beneath you, yet you are
totally peaceful…” Simone de Beauvoir
• The modern Left Bank is not a physical place
• We find similar feelings of connectedness with
Twitter

Democratization of Media
• Twitter has become the medium of discourse
– The place where breaking news occurs
– The place for immediate reflection on media
• Transformations of use mean media is being
democratized
• Twitter’s power lies in the power of network
amplification

5. Disintermediation of Media
• Tweeting the Shanghai earthquake 2008
– Twitter reports the news in minutes
– Mainstream media catches up hours later
• Media following tweets to see “what’s
happening”
• Listening to the latest from your neighbours
– Proximity without geography

The Village
• Importance of physical proximity reduced
• Enables users to build networks of affiliation
wider than a closed network
• Reduces power distance between individuals
• Creates a platform for open social discourse
that bridges physical and power distance

7. Conclusion
Dec 2010 B. Ballsun-Stanton & K. Carruthers 7
• Twitter and the non-localized proximity it
offers is a good exemplar of potential future
directions for the web.
• Twitter will be eclipsed by the ‘next big thing’
• But as a means for democratized
communication, publication and distribution it
offers an excellent case study.

Not physical place
Virtual proximity
Real interactions
the users have appropriated virtual space in Twitter in similar way to the authors in the Cafe Flores
People can overhear and participate in novel conversations
New ideas from unconsidered sources
Twitter has become the medium of discourse
Twitter is the place where breaking news occurs
journalists hang out there for tips
Transformations of use mean media is being democratized
anti-Nestle campaign by Greenpeace
Activism via twitter draws traditional media attention
Hudson River plane crash where iPhone & Twitter trumped traditional media
Truly breaking news
Twitter has immediacy
Twitter’s power lies in the power of network amplification
One person’s observations of their environment
Amplified by their social network
Then the networks of those networks
Interesting things float to the surface of the “collective minds” of twitter
The shanghai earthquake reported via twitter within minutes
The old model is no longer valid
Media used to “mediate” between events and people
Editors would decide “newsworthy” topics
Events sized to fit within print or broadcast lengths
New model
Everyone can be a journalist
No barrier to entry
Journalism happens as a side-effect of network amplification
news organizations have embraced Twitter as part of their communications arsenal
Virtual proximity to people of their choice empowers twitter users
Non-localized proximity:
users are watching TV and communicating on Twitter about the programs in realtime
creating non-localized proximity
a virtual proximity rather than a geographical proximity
With Twitter the importance of physical proximity is reduced
users to build networks of affiliation that are wider than Facebook
Twitter reduces the power barrier between individuals
Members of congress are tweeting real-time to their consitutients from the floor of the house
it creates a platform for open social discourse that bridges physical and power distance
These loose ties afforded by Twitter ensure individuals can access broader networks separate to those afforded by physical proximity
The asynchronous nature of Twitter based interactions
facilitates the development of weak ties
Aware of larger aspects of the world
Broader networks of affiliation enabled by these factors
Twitter and the non-localized proximity it offers is a good exemplar of potential future directions for the web.
Twitter will be eclipsed by the ‘next big thing’
But as a means for democratized communication, publication and distribution it offers an excellent case study.
