La colaboración entre la BNE y Telefónica ha sido objeto de interés en la reunión de Europeana. Durante dicha reunión se organizaron diferentes talleres y la BNE participó en el de “Colaboraciones entre el sector público y el privado” (Public-Private Partnerships). Este interés por el convenio de la BNE con Telefónica quedó de manifiesto en el reciente informe The new Renaissance de un “Comité de Sabios” de la Comisión Europea. En la reunión la intervención de José Luis Bueren se centró en explicar cómo se articula el Convenio de Colaboración, qué se ha logrado hasta ahora, qué se prevé alcanzar en 2012 y las conclusiones de esta colaboración.

3. General information about the BNE
• Created in 1711 as Royal Public Library
• Becomes the National Library in 1836
• Emblematic Headquarters building at the heart of Madrid

with SOLR search engine
• Metadata: Marc21, DC, METS, ESE.
• Different selection criteria for the content
• The whole BDH is accessible in TEL, Europeana and Hispana
• January 2011 > Integration of the historical press application

user have seen, new document alerts, federated search in external
sources (Hispana, Europeana), implementing BDH in other webs…

10. Strategic partner agreement
• Signed in 2008 as a result of successful launching (visits,
downloading and media coverage)
• 10.000.000 euros contribution:
• Scope: 200.000 works / 25.000.000 digital images by the end of 2012.
• Conditions:
• Telefónica can deduct this contribution from Corporate Tax
• The logo of Telefónica must appear in the Digital Library Portal and
Telefónica’s sponsorship has to be mentioned in any communication of
the Library regarding the mass digitisation project
• Exclusivity of this agreement in terms of other telecommunication
companies which could be considered as competitors of Telefónica
• Promotional activities

11. Special benefits for the BNE
• The main benefit for the Library is the funding of the mass
digitisation activities
• The BNE is the only owner of the digital images (both access and
master copies)
• It is unique responsible for the digitised content and for the technical
specifications
• Quality of the content and of the process is assured as long as it is
done under the Library’s criteria and needs
• Access to the digital objects depends only of the BNE
• Expertise of Telefónica + administrative management

12. Work done
• Around 50.000 titles digitised: manuscripts, XVI-XXth century
books, musical scores, historic press, maps, photographs,
engravings.
• Around 15.000.000 digitised pages.
• Promotion: Interactive Quijote – Interactive Leonardo.
• We can focus on many other activities.

14. Conclusions
• Great success: number of users, quality/quantity of the work,
experience acquired, relationship with Telefónica:
• 1.400.000 documents downloaded in 2010.
• Necessity of assuring funding.
• What have we learnt?
• The importance of planning: 25.000.000/200.000 = 125
• Impact in the Library processes > all the Services are implied in this
project > more than 30.000 pages/day digitized.
• Institutional support.
• Long term preservation.
• Take advantage of others expertise.
• Access and visibility.
