2. Locality/geography You may join a group based on the fact that it is in your local community. E.g joining a local soccer club
3. Gender We may be grouped according to whether we are male or female based on social etiquette. E.g Mother’s groups
4. Shared interest/common goal These groups form because group members have a particular interest. E.gsuch as a hobby, artistic or sporting talent and/or a common goal such as a church or community fund raising group.
5. Security Being part of a group provides us with a sense of security. E.gNeighbourhood watch group that voluntarily meets regularly to discuss and implement safety measures for the local community.
6. Sexuality Groups may be formed based on a person’s sexuality. E.ginclude a variety of gay and lesbian groups within the community.
7. Specific Needs This type of group forms in responses to a particular need. It may be temporary and the group disbands when the need is met. E.gvolunteer groups assisting in response to a natural disaster.
8. Social Interaction We all need to enjoy time with others. Groups formed with the primary goal of social interaction include a gathering at a party, a work social club and a Mother’s group.
9. Culture A group may form from a particular culture to enjoy communicating in their native language, eating traditional food and experience activities familiar to this culture.
