SOCIOLOGY………… - Latin “Socius” - “social or being with others” - and the Greek “logos” - “study” Therefore, the term “Sociology” basically means the “study of social beings”. It studies: human behavior in groups social structure and social phenomena different forms of human interrelations The Sociological Foundation - Issues from society including groups and institutions in the culture and their contribution to education - refers to issues from society that have an influence on curriculum. There are many aspects of the society that need consideration in curriculum making. These include: Changes occurring in societal structures; Transmission of culture; social problems as issues for Curriculum and Economics issues. AIMS OF EDUCATION Schools exist within, not apart from, social context Schools emerges within society Development of social feelings and qualities Development of a socially efficient individual Improvement of vocational efficiency Use of leisure time and development of healthy recreational pursuits Transmission of social heritage Diffusion of more and more knowledge Development of constructive and creative outlook of the individual Education for social service, social efficiency, emotional integration, national unity and patriotism CURRICULUM Based on conditions, problems and needs of society An agent for transmission of basic values of culture Prepare the child for global/world society Flexible and changeable for the effective realization of socially determined objectives Lead to the development of genuine ‘we feeling’ i.e. of a group having a spirit of social interaction METHODS OF TEACHING Enable child to acquire skills and knowledge needed Develop a capacity for social adjustment Develop problem solving and constructive thinking Socialized techniques; project and group methods ROLE OF THE TEACHER Destiny of the nation is shaped in classrooms by the teachers Be exposed to the concept of freedom, dignity of the individual, rights and duties so as to transmit the same to the younger generation Expected to possess right attitude of social behavior Remain above casteism, regionalism THE SCHOOL Reflect and epitomize the larger society outside its walls Balance, purify and simplify the activities of the society in its environment CONCLUSION Education takes place in society Education is essentially a social process Social environment educates the child education has a social role to play Education is a lifelong process Education is not only schooling Education must be social in nature and develop democratic skills and values in students

Most parents do not address the issue of moral development of their children in any special way either from not knowing what to do, or because they think they don’t have the time. In most cases at best, an environment based on traditional beliefs and practices is created within the household with the hope that children will 'catch' the appropriate values by themselves. But this does not happen all the time! How else do we explain our rapidly falling moral standards? Our society has seen sustained decline in its moral, ethical and cultural standards and values over the years. The problem is not so much the corruption, permissiveness and immorality that seem to abound all around. The greater problem is that we seem to be okay with them, and not inclined to do much about them. Not within the realm of education anyway! The onus is on schools to do something really effective in this area. Unfortunately, in most cases, the approach by most schools towards moral and value education has at best been a mechanical one without the seriousness and thoughtful consideration that it deserves. Isn’t it time for our schools to now take a new and hard look at the manner in which they currently address this indispensable area of education? The present crisis of increasing immorality presents schools with a great opportunity. But will they take it? Are they up to the challenge?

Share your knowledge, go from darkness to Light . In a formal teaching environment, various content and subjects are exchanged between teachers and learners. A student’s learning is assessed only through the contents -its retention, its depth, and width. However, none of these give any measure to the amount of luminance of light that a learner has acquired and passed on during his/her learning processes using content as a vehicle. Thus the acquired luminance of light acts as the learner’s North Star of life – a guiding path. With this, the learner achieves success, builds family, contributes to society, and becomes part of the bonafide citizenry of any nation.

Assumptions/Givens About Human Nature: - Human beings are innately curious with a desire to know the environment in which they live. They show this curiosity throughout their lives and therefore they are life-long learners. - Human beings are innately social and learn how to operate in social settings during their infancy. - Human beings have multiple ways in which they show their intelligence. There are however two basic components of thought: Logico-scientific and narrative. - There are stages of development which children go through. Their appearance is partially natural and partially through the assistance of adult (scaffolding). - Human beings are Subjects -- human beings make a difference and can through their actions make changes to the world in which they live. - Human beings are unfinished (historical) -- Because human beings are Subjects, they always have the potential to change both themselves and society around them – in this sense learning as well as reflection and social action are a continuing part of their lives. But human beings live within social structures that can either expand or limit their options. Thus human beings all have a history and are affected by that history. - Human beings are curious – Human beings are struck by things that are different (ingenious or spontaneous curiosity). They want to understand things, they want to know why and how things are the way they are. Epistemological curiosity examines itself through the application of dialogue and analysis. Implications for Educators: - Learning and teaching are social in nature and begins in infancy. - Adults play an essential role in the development of the child. Developmental stages cannot be rushed, but they can be help by the aid of an adult community member. - Subject areas may have unique but interrelated structure that relates to the operations of the human mind. - Through the use of language a child learns to "negotiate" meaning in life. "Negotiate" has more than one meaning – the two most important of which are (a) learns way around obstacles and (b) engages in exchanges for the purpose of finding mutually satisfying results. - Learning involves the "construction" of meaning. There is no reality, truth, right or wrong existing in the world waiting to be discovered. Each person in conjunction with the communities in which they operate construct reality, truth, right and wrong. - Human beings are curious. A major part of the curiosity is the desire to know and learn. - Human beings naturally learn a culture. Human knowledge has a significant cultural component that is grounded in shared information. Human beings are not simply products of nature but shape nature toward desired ends. - Human knowledge requires information upon which to apply the formal rules of thinking, creating and problem solving.
