This document summarizes the second webinar of the 2013 DAAD Alumni Summer School on coping with disasters and climate extremes. It discusses ecosystem degradation increasing disaster risk and introduces ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction. Participants discuss recent extreme events in their regions and challenges. Questions are posed on examples of ecosystem degradation increasing risk, ecosystem-based projects, and challenges to implementing such projects. The discussion will continue online.

Wrap Up – Webinar I
•
Introduction of team members and overview of the general topics of
the Summer School (short videos)
•
Concepts and different definitions (Risk, adaptation, coping, etc.)
•
Discussion with the participants in the chat and the Alumniportal
1. Are landslides, earthquakes and such really sidelined by the
climate
change debate?
2. Coping is a subcomponent of adaptation (?!)
3. Creeping processes are sidelined by the focus on extreme events!
