3. Explorer Christopher Columbus was born in Italy in 1451. He was a great explorer and sailor. He traveled a lot. As a result of his many voyages h e discovered many new places. When Christopher Columbs was 13 years old he went to sea . He found sea journeys very exciting. Very s oon he became an expert sailor.

4. A new route Christopher Columbs wanted to find a new route to China. He believed he could reach the Far East to China by sail i ng west. That was a new idea in 1492 . But he had no money and ships. He decided to ask the kings and gueen of Spain to give him the money.

5. First voyage In 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail on his first voyage from Spain. At first, he had three ships. They were called Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean for 69 days. Finally he saw an island. He named the island San Salavador. Columbus also explored other islands in the area. He discovered Hispaniola and Cuba. He thought he had reached Asia. So he called the people he met in the islands Indians.
