2. â Visual literacy is not limited to the ability to decode the meaning and impact of existing visual images in art or visual culture, but also includes comprehension of how knowledge and reality are constructed and interpreted through making images. Visual images are seen as part of practice; an evolving process that includes questioning, resource gathering, analysis, hypothesis, and especially, creating. Understanding this process requires experience in creating and reflecting on one's own visual interpretations (Elkins, 2003). It is a way we learn from ourselves.â Image as Insight: Visual Images in Practice-Based Research Julia Marshall Studies in Art Education A Journal of Issues and Research 2007, 49(1), 23-41
