regions, of which the North,
Central and South are
already functional. The
Decision is to support
balanced socio-economic
development throughout the
country.
3. South Development Region - 8 Districts:
Leova, Cimişlia, Căuşeni, Ştefan Vodă, Cantemir,
Basarabeasca, Taraclia şi Cahul
4. Presentation Overview
• Surface- 7379 km2 ( 24,2 % of the total
land);
• Population - 537,2 mii people(15,1% of
the total country);
• Rural population– 74,8% (compared to
the national average of 58.4%);
• Urban population– 25,2% (compared to
the country average of 41.6% );
• Population density– 73,3 /km2
(compared to the country average of
116,9%);
• LPA I in the District - 187 (20.8% of the
total country);
• Cimișlia town is the Regional
Development Center in the South Region.
16. Region Performance
In 2013 the South Development Region produced:
o 58% of the total volume of grapes in the country;
o 36 % of the cognac in Moldova;
o 30 % of the grains in the first group and maize;
o 23% of the sunflower oil in the country;
o 20 % of the wines fabricated in Modova.

International Giurgiuleşti free port;

two with the EU in Romania;

European Economic Corridor,
Budapesta Economic Corridor,
Odessa, Giurgiuleşti-Briceni Corridor;
• Railway section of Cahul –
Giurgiuleşti that offers an outlet to
the Black Sea;
• Existing Infrastructure for electricity
and natural gas supply ;
• Developed network of pipelines in
the region (weight of gas supplied
towns - 76.8% compared to the
national average 56.5%).
19. Economic and institutional
advantages
• 3 free economic zones "Tvardiţa" "Taraclia" and
International Free Port "Giurgiuleşti“;
• 2 business incubators in Stefan Voda and Leova;
• The existence of a network of processing agricultural
products;
• Membership of SDR districts to 3 Euro regions "Siret-
Prut-Nistru", "Lower Danube" and "Black Sea";
• Functional South Regional Development Council.
20. Region deficiencies
• Underdeveloped industrialization;
• no big cities and low degree of urbanization;
• excessive fragmentation of agricultural land (farms);
• Too much of unprocessed and abandoned farmland;
• poor cooperation between producers;
• undeveloped infrastructure for collection, storage and
marketing of agricultural products.
21. Region Deficiencies
• Small number of SMEs operating in the region (5% of the
country);
• low capacity of local businesses to invest for
development;
• limited access to finance and high interest rates;
• large gap between the supply and demand and the level
qualifications of the labor force;
• lack of integrated regional level business support.

SDR will become a dynamic and prosperous region with a
sustainable and efficient economy, based on an innovative
approach with a modern physical infrastructure, the human

which will ensure a high quality of life for residents of the
entire region.
