Speed Networking
Face to face networking is both an acquired skill and an art requiring
refinement and practice to become fluid and automatic
We will use “speed dating” format to approximate how successful
networkers “work” a room”
Participants will get to know more about each other as job search individuals
Participants will have the opportunity to test and refine their self-marketing
pitches
Participants will get a feel for the give-and-take of a brief dialog
We will have a handout to explain the activity

Speed Networking
We will take up to 5 minutes to explain the exercise and
briefly answer a few questions
Participants will have 25 minutes to connect with 5 people,
about four minutes each
Somebody will be the timer; at 4 minutes the timer will
signal 30 seconds to go; at 4:30 minutes the timer will signal
the networkers to switch to a new connection
This will be a three-week trial. The facilitators may provide observations
The scenario will be a professional association meeting (alternative: an
alum association speed dating event, capped by a presentation)

self-marketing pitches … all at once or in a series of
segments prompted by questions

Ask questions and share information. Balance selfishness
and helping the other person

conversation later; an opportunity to exchange contact
information, and/or get/give very brief feedback
