4. Study Area
Geographically Solapur is located between
17.10 to 18.32 degrees north latitude and
74.42 to 76.15 degrees east longitude. The
district is situated on the south east fringe
of Maharashtra State.
The district in general has flat terrain
Area = 14844.6 sq.kms
338.8 sq.kms is Urban area
14505.8 sq.kms is Rural area

6. Methodology for Data Interpretation
Each of the groundwater samples were analyzed for various parameters such as
pH, total hardness, calcium, magnesium, chloride, TDS, fluoride, nitrate, sulphate,
manganese and total alkalinity

7. Method for Calculation of Water Quality Index
for Ground Water
Step I
Each of the selected parameters has been assigned a weight (wi) according to its
relative importance in the overall quality of water for drinking purposes.
The maximum weight of 5 has been assigned to the parameter nitrate due to its major
importance in water quality assessment. Magnesium which is given the minimum
weight of 2 as magnesium by itself may not be harmful

Step III
A quality rating scale (qi) for each parameter is assigned
qi = (Ci/ Si) x 100
where qi is the quality rating,
Ci is the concentration of each chemical parameter in each water sample in mg/L,
and Si is the Indian drinking water standard for each chemical parameter in mg/L
according to the guidelines of the BIS 10500, (2004-2005

Sangola Indicates Excellent Water Quality. Water Quality Index is affected by
Nitrate conc. Agricultural runoff is the major contributor to the nitrate
contamination in ground water.
