What is eLearning?Learning that is conducted via electronic media, which is facilitated by the use of digital tools.… or much simpler put…Using technology to deliver learning. This PPT can be found on Slidesharehttp://www.slideshare.net/wilmuedtech
Today’s trends demonstrate text and texting have overtaken personal voice in communicating with one another.Gartner, the technology research company, predicts that by 2013 online video will be commonplace.http://www.lindsayabbottvoiceover.com/2011/02/audio-and-the-e-learning-industry/ Even though the trends show the high use of text, students today will learn more quickly if you envelope all their senses; The generation that grew up with television will want that same experience in learning.Instructors have to consider the different learning styles of students and use different forms of media to meet their needs. Audio is important in the classroom, either using audio as a teacher or having your students utilize audio themselves.Engage your students by replacing dry text reading with interesting audio. Become an edu-tainer by using voice in your online course. Using voice will engage students and increase learning.
How do we communicate in a course? All those wayslisted can be done in an online course. And all can be enhanced with audio.
The 1st part of the audio chain is the sound card. The next time you purchase a computer, put money in an upgraded sound card, since the sound card does most of the “behind the scenes work.” You need a good microphone, its probably the 2nd most important part of the audio chain. you don't have to spend a lot of money on a microphone for voice to computer recording. But look at consumer ratings and reviews to help you decide. Microphone Connector to Computer– either USB or the 3.5mm mini plug. One microphone connector is the TRS connector, also known as the jack, in 1/4" (6.35 mm), 3.5 mm, and 2.5 mm sizes, and in both mono and stereo configurations. TRS stands for “Tip ring sleeve” Headphone cables consist of three separate wires. One carries the signal for the left headphone driver, the second has the signal for the right headphone driver, and the third wire is the grounded wire. The microphone with the USB connection is nowadays most common and easily plug and playable.Read more: How to Make a Headphone Cable | eHow.comhttp://www.ehow.com/how_7670935_make-headphone-cable.html#ixzz1cNXqkd8ZNot all microphone plugs that appear to be stereo are actually stereo. Many mono computer microphones use 3-conductor TRS 3.5 mm plugs in order to carry other signals, such as bias power for an electric element, to or from the microphone.Length of cord – if you are wearing the headset or lapel mic, make sure it is at least 6 feet long to get around the desk.Troubleshooting the microphone – probably the biggest problem you’ll face is making sure the microphone you’re using is selected as the input device on your computer and in the recording software you are using.Plugging the microphone in the correct port. One thing you must consider is how the microphone picks up the sound waves.OmnidirectionalPicks up sound evenly from all directions (omni means "all" or "every"). UnidirectionalPicks up sound predominantly from one direction. This includes cardioid and hypercardioid microphones… recording Direction – Cardiod – picks up sounds from the front, reduces pickup of sounds from sides and rearBidirectionalPicks up sound from two opposite directions.
Blackboard bought two companies, Wimba and Elluminate.Colleges using wimba or Ellumniate can either continue to use their existing software or shift to the new Collaborate platform at no additional cost. Blackboard plans to gradually phase out the products—it promises support for the current version of Elluminate through December of 2012 and of Wimba Classroom until January of 2014.July 2011, Blackboard announced a new version of collaboration software tools called Collaborate.
From the Tool Box, If the check box is selected, students may also use this tool to create an audio file and send.
In the online classroom, student and instructor communication is often limited to text and static images. Instead of a regular Discussion Board, try Voice Board. Important elements of face-to-face communication, including the nuances of voice, are missing from text-based discussions. contributing to greater clarity and understanding.
15 sec to 20 minute limit recording
Microsoft Word 2003 had an audio review solution to record audio on feedback, however since then the process has become left out in Word 2010.One solution is to open the students .doc file and open Microsoft One Note.Using the recording tools, record, stop and copy the audio file between programs.Save the students paper and attach in the View Attempts page as an attachment.
Must be aware of mac vs pc computers; you need to copy and paste .mp3 or .wav file for students. Some computers won’t play the .wma file extension

"Instead of canceling class during a snowstorm, I met my students virtually," recalls Frydenberg of one instance when he used the application. "They met me on join.me, where I shared my screen, and we all called in to listen to the conversation. I called on students in the chat room who had questions, and asked individual students to complete different steps of a software demonstration." http://campustechnology.com/articles/2011/02/15/free-meeting-app-goes-mobile.aspx?sc_lang=en

The website is http://blabberize.com/. this siteallows teachers/students to upload pictures from saved images or document cameras and add a sound source to it. This web tool is a great alternative for students who are uncomfortable giving oral presentations. I would use this in the classroom during a history lesson on important people from the past and give the students the opportunity to use their voice to give their figure life. There is no cost for this website as of now, you simply register with a name and email.
VoiceThread is a web-based application that allows you to place collections of media like images, videos, documents, and presentations at the center of an asynchronous conversation. A VoiceThread allows people to have conversations and to make comments using any mix of text, a microphone, a web cam, a telephone, or uploaded audio file. VoiceThread runs inside your web browser, so there is no software to download, install, or update.

Create video of what you see on your computer monitor.Share it instantly via web, email, IM, Twitter or your blog Create a video orientation in an online course: orientation, show how to do something, introduces new concepts, and delivers individual feedback on projects, give students a rewind button to play back instruction.Camtasia is the King of Jing… more editing tools, transitions, call-outs and zoom and pan effects are available in Camtasia.
Alexandra Pickett, associate director of the SUNY Learning Network, uses Audioboo to give oral feedback instead of written review, which she believes leads to increased learning and engagement. Being able to make audio comments is also a huge time-saver, she claims: "Boos make my feedback richer and more extensive, my teaching and social presence more meaningful."
