29. Using NDVI Data Some of the key uses of these data: 1. Classification of vineyard blocks by degree of variation. 2. Percent of vine cover. 3. Leaf Area Index – found to be more accurate than field estimations. 4. Percent Shaded Area – useful to calculate crop coefficient. 5. Pruning Weights 6. Crop Coefficient – water use models 8. Water Use – gallons per sq. area or per vine. 7. Leaf Water Potential
30. NDVI Shone Farms Compliments of VineView (http://www.vineview.com/)
Introduce Walter- GIS for 45,0000, Mapping project for State of CA, Vineyard & SCAPOSD w/RCA. Ray is a surveyor and vineyard owner 80ac demo for us.
Use GIS to collect the data you need to create an accurate and organized record of past applications in order to find and grow your successes. Use GIS to scientifically focus your daily operations , help you plan daily work assignments and assist in the most intricate facets of inventory control, ordering and monitoring. Decisions/Planning With the information you gather from a strong and personalized geographic information system, you make more precise and knowledgeable decisions while clarifying your intentions with impressive graphic presentations. One Project Benefits Entire Company A lot of clients we are in first loop- just getting parcels & vineyards' mapped!
Contracts – using more detailed info like brix, color, exact tons. Sonoma Cutrer based contracts per acre which is more typical on Kims mapping, so even if not their property reason to map. Planning tool – seem many examples coming up Central place – get info out of managers head. Where are all the irrigation linesProperty value buying land and not the guy who has all the info. Never Count Vines again 5-20% error in our method. Water issues & Sustainability tracking, efficiency, etc.. Accurate Information about land = Improved Value Terroir example of geysers pipeline running by vineyard having flavor of gas – Terroir;-) More time to focus on quality improvement once System in place. Not a worker replacement!
Not if, but when you do GIS. You who have or are considering it are already ahead of the curve.
Centerline of all blue line creeks (except Russian River) + 100ft buffer = 83,196ac Waterbody extent of Russian River (not edge of bank) as mapped on USGS + 200ft =4,951ac Total = 88,147ac
Project example “Farm C” Vineyard, winery residential and commercial development. Great planning tool-Key is a ‘real world’ orientation of the project. Good to know what was there before-this case we looked for wells – Soils and previous pond extents.
Messy Map – my favorite! Utility line and As built deer fence not online. 10ft along Point out flip side of environmentally concerned trees, creek set backs, 80/20 rule.
All lines are 20ft long-notice curving boundary of vineyard better estimate.
Napa example ;-) Pat here? We are at a great Difference from some of the public data versus what we do as surveyors
Winemaker for harvest and vineyard mgr to line up crews for ‘red’ areas. Tons Expected.
Quality versus Yield analysis. Build into a book for everyone reference or all digital – depends on your outfit needs.
Kim more on later, but central land info for all data. Easier to see cost relation ships to bottle which is next step here.

Make point about over 10K acres Few comments on GeoPDF vs RCA web mapping to access data online. This last year was a development year (every year is a process of improving on the last) but last year we moved into web mapping. Which means any data we create can be accessed to a via the web or mobile device. This is the future for vineyards like it has been for public entities, but geopdf serves the perfect adjunct to a web mapping platform as a data deliverable GIS packet. Example of multiple ranches or clients accessing single map server saving out geopdfs.
GIS Vineyard client took database & mapping method and decided to see how bad infestation was.
Rootsocks just don’t change that much – spacing does. Maps on table up here if you want to see.
For marketing in New York, gifts to growers, website, etc…

Project with Shone Farms.
General variation now look at pits.Shone farms is all one type!
Probes problem
I have a bunch of graduate project ideas and data ;-) no time allocated or wanting to get too far into these issues sometimes. I will concede the correllation between NDVI and ground differences can be made only so far-more like managenment areas than actual vine.
Point about working off grid and ability to now collect data via adobe forms. Feeding excel off database until up to speed. Challenges of integrating disparate programs to have a truly useful GIS centered system as intended. Legacy systems, etc.. You all know about this pretty well and analagy is good.
