Each year, The Southern Star publishes guides of “50 things to see & do” in towns across County Cork. Their recommendations combine well known cultural attractions in urban areas with gems located off the beaten track, which include ancestral sites alongside some of the country’s top birdwatching and surf spots.

Lunch at Scannells is a must on any visit to Clonakilty. We believe
the base ingredients are the key. Seasonal, organic and local are
genuinely important words to us. But there's more to us than just
the grub. Great summer gigs, a wonderful garden and an old world
bar make for evenings full of banter and fun. See you there.

BANDON
soccer
star Conor
Hourihane
would
swap
his Johnstone’s
Paint
Tro-
phy final
winner’s
medal
for League
1
play-off
final
glory
this Sunday.
The
Barnsley
captain
led the Tykes
to Johnstone’s
Paint
Trophy
success
at
Wembley
in early
April,
and he is back
attheworld-famous
stadium,
again,
this
Sunday
when
he leads
his team
into the
League
1 play-off
final
against
Millwall.
Promotion
to the English
Champion-
ship
is up for grabs,
and West
Cork’s
finest
soccer
export
has his sights
set on
a glorious
end to the season.
‘The
prize
at the end of this is fantas-
tic,’ Hourihane
(25)
told The Southern
Star
during
his short
trip home
to Ban-
don last weekend.
‘The
club
got £500,000
for winning
the Johnstone’s
Paint
Trophy
final
but
I think
it’s worth
£8 million
if we win
the play-off
final
on Sunday.
The prize
is so big – Championship
football
next
season
– and we’ll
do all we can to get
over
the line.
‘This
is a bigger
game
than
the John-
stone’s
Paint
Trophy
final,
without
a
doubt.
You’d
swap
that winner’s
medal
for a League
1 promotion
final
winner’s
medal.
‘Winning
the Johnstone’s
Paint
Tro-
phy final
was a special
day and a fantas-
tic occasion
for the club,
but to win
promotion
offtheback
ofaseason’s
work,
would
be a lot more
satis-
fying.
If you get promoted,
you
earned
it over
the season
– and it
would
be fantastic
if we can do
that at Wembley
on Sunday.’
Former
Bandon
AFC
and
Douglas

underage
ace
Hourihane
(pictured)
has
been
in sparkling
form
for
Barnsley
again
this
season,
scoring
11 goals
and assisting
a further
17 as he inspired
his side
into the play-offs
and the 6-1 aggregate
semi-final
win against
Walsall.
He feels
Barnsley
are in good
form
at
the right
time
of
the season
and that
their
good
experi-
ence
of Wembley
– when
winning
the
Johnstone’s
Paint
Trophy
final
in
April
– will help
them
thisSunday
(3pm
kick-off).
‘ W i n n i n g
there
a few

will definitely
help,
espe-
cially
with
the
build-up
– we
know
what’s
in-
volved,
how
it will
impact
our training
this week,
what
the
pitch
is like,
how
the days
runs,’
Houri-
hane
explained.
‘We have
been
through
this before
so
thatmight
giveusanedge
butultimately
it’s all about
what
happens
on the pitch
on Sunday.
‘We
beat
Millwall
twice
(home
and
away)
during
theleague
butthatdoesn’t
count
foranything
inaone-off
game
like
Sunday.’
Former

Hourihane
added:
‘We have
been
playing
some
good
stuff
in the last
fewgames.
Around
thetime
oftheJohn-
stone’s
Paint
Trophy
final
we weren’t
playing
great,
but we were
digging
out
1-0 results.
‘Over
the last few games
we’ve
played
well–wescored
sixgoals
against
Walsall
over
two legs,
we scored
four
against
Wigan
(League
1champions)
onthefinal

togetintotheplay-offs,
so we are full of confidence
for Sunday.’

household utilities and mobil-
ity, so when Muintir na Tire
was established the people of
Ballinadee wholeheartedly
embraced it as a way of rais-
ing peoples’ living standards.
MuintirnaTirewasamove-
ment for improvement. Tom
Hales, the War of Independ-
ence veteran and politician
– was instrumental in setting
upthegroupinBallinadeeand
from the outset they were de-
termined to provide the com-
munity with a hall– a place for
communalanddevelopmental
meetings, as well as a place
where they could socialise.
Membersofthecommunity
contributed to the cost, there-
by becoming shareholders in
the building. Shareholders, or
stakeholders, is a term that’s
very much in vogue today as
an indicator that people have
a vested interest, and that is
very much the case here.
Ballinadee Hall was built
on the land of local farmer,
DanielMcCarthy,andO’Brien
Builders from Bandon were
contracted to build it. From
the very start the hall was a
success.
It became a hive of activ-
ity; a place where regular
meetings were held, as well
as classes and, from time to
time,dramaticproductions.It
iswitharealsenseofnostalgia
that some older members of
the community remembered
the dancehall days, especially
the ‘pioneer socials.’
But as people became more
mobile they started to move
further afield and travelled
to nearby towns to frequent
thebiggerdancehalls,suchas
Bandon Town Hall.
Ballinadee Hall was not,
however, neglected. For a
time, it became a focal point
for the younger members of
the community and served
as a venue for basketball and
badminton.
It was also used for Macra
field days, and fashion shows,
andconcertsduringthe1980s,
but the real change – in soci-
ety and the usage of the hall
– came in the 1990s.
Over the last quarter of a
century, the building has
stood quietly, biding its time.
But soon, very soon, it will
once again be a safe space for
the young, the old, and those
in between.

For some time the village of
Ballinadee, which is nestled
in the heart of the countryside
between Kinsale and Bandon,
has been witnessing its own
decline. Community life there
had dwindled ... until now.
The people of Ballinadee
havedecidedtotakeaction.At
a meeting on March 16th last,
they agreed to make the ne-
glected community hall their
first priority and breathe new
life into it.
Usage of Ballinadee Hall

years that it stood as almost as
an external representation of
the decline of this small rural
community.
Alotofpeopleturnedupfor
that community meeting and
it was clear from the energy
andtheenthusiasmexpressed
that it would not be long be-
fore the hall would once again
be an important focal point in
village life.

disappeared
last

as the

the

after

, filming
and

With
the

there

and
the

which
was

he said.
Deputy
Jim
Daly
agreed
that
the
area
has
‘enormous
potential
for
a tourism
spin-
off.
Now
is the
time
to plan
and
take
advantage
when
the
movie

Depu-
ty Daly
said
this
week.
He
added
that
the
Film
Office
in Cork,
set
up during
his
time
as County
Mayor
in
2010,
should
be tasked
with
promoting
the
location
and
highlighting
the
potential
for
other
movie
makers.Local
publican
Dermot
O’Sullivan
from
Crookhaven
said
he also
saw
huge
poten-
tial
in the
area
but
cautioned
that
the
access
road
would
need
significant
investment
in order
to make
it safe
for
two
vehicles
topass
safely,
and
for
foreign
drivers.
‘It is quite
dangerous
in spots,’
he said,
‘and
I wouldn’t
want
to see
anyone
driving
up there
until
that
road
is made
safe.’
But
he added
that
he
hugely
impressed
condition
of the
site
after
the
crew
left
last
weekend.
‘I
walked
right
out
to the
Head
with
my
daughter
and
there
wasn’t
so much
as a match-
stick
left
behind.
I even
heard
they
had
men
dangling
on
ropes
gluing
back
in a few
rocks
that
had
become
loos-
ened
during
filming,’
he said.
‘They
did
a magnificen
t job
of clearing
the
site
when
they
left.’
Danny
O’Keeffe,
who
owns
the
house
closest
to the
set,
agreed
that
the
area
should
be
tapped
for
its potential,
with-
out
delay.
‘The
road
is there,
the
pathway
is there,
and
it is
an absolutely
stunning
loca-
tion,’
he said,
referring
to the
views
of Barleycove
on
one
side,
tothe
Fastnet
onthe
oth-
er, and
down
to the
peninsula
which
is home
to the
harbour

of Crookhaven
.
Deputy
Margaret
Murphy
O’Mahony
said
she
was
also
backing
the
calls
to have
the
area
made
into
a tourism
des-
tination,
but
sounded
a word
of caution,
saying
the
roads
and

in the

should
be tackled
first.

4. We’re using the FREE
what3words app ...
but what is it?
Despite having an address, phone number or maybe even a web
address for the business or attraction that you want to find – it can still
prove difficult to find the exact physical location. But don’t worry, help is at
hand, via a new app called ‘what3words’ which is available for smartphones,
tablets etc. The app, which has divided and mapped the entire planet into
57 trillion 3mx3m squares, gives each of those squares a unique, random
three-word address.
Adverts and places of interest referenced in this magazine have such an
address printed on them and all you need to do to get the exact location is
download the app onto your device, enter the ‘address’ (exactly as you see
it) and hey presto, you have the precise location on the map.
Here is an example of ‘what3words’
coordinates as they will appear on an
advert or attraction:
Clonakilty, often known locally as‘Clon’is approximately 45 minutes by road to
the west of Cork city. The town is located at the head of the tidal Clonakilty Bay
and is surrounded by rolling hills, estuaries and beaches. There’s always some-
thing happening in this vibrant town – including festivals, music, parades, great
shopping and a the town offers a wide variety of pubs, cafés and restaraunts as
well as a cinema and swimming pools.Clonakilty makes a great base from which
to explore the locality and the widerWest Cork area.
The town has undergone something of a facelift in the past year or so, with a
beautiful new streetscape recently completed. In true Clonakilty style, the entire
community came out to celebrate this with a fantastic carnival on June 12th and
in doing so extended a warmWest Cork welcome to all to come and enjoy all that
Clon has to offer.See you there!

8. 8 50 Things to see and do
Timoleague is a picturesque village, situated on the Kinsale to
Clonakilty coast road (the R600). Perched on the edge of a long sea inlet,
this friendly tourist village is dominated by the ruins of a 13th century
abbey. The abbey was founded by the Franciscan order in 1240 A.D., on the
site of a 6th century monastic settlement founded by Saint Molaga. The
name Timoleague comes from the Irish for House of Molaga (Tigh Molaga).
Courtmacsherry village, just a few kilometres down the estuary from
Timoleague, is one of the true gems of West Cork – it has a wealth of natural
beauty and boasts a wide range of leisure activities for the visitor, such as

The Seven Heads Peninsula
Driving the Seven Heads is a most scenic journey. It is a deeply indented and
rugged coastline that stretches from Timoleague through Courtmacsherry,
around Dunworley Bay and on to Ballinglanna. Route maps are available in
most shops for walkers and show the different routes and their distances.

Dunworley Beach – Beachcomb for treasure
After a storm, you may be lucky enough to find one of the coveted blue
beads which sometimes get washed up from the depths. The treacher-
ous rocks around the bay caused a few shipwrecks in the past and the
beads are thought to come from either the Rover,an Algerian Pirate Ship
which sank in 1631 or from the Amity,an African slave ship which sank in 1700 and which was
carrying timber, glass and elephant tusks when it went down.

Get married!
Clonakilty,Rosscarbery and Courtmacsherry are amongst the most popular destinations to
get hitched inWest Cork. It’s quite obvious to see why. There’s a choice of high class hotels,
all of whom have the experience to make a special day really memorable, wonderful scenery,
romantic churches and venues for civil ceremonies, and it’s quite simply a lovely part of Ireland
to visit.Calling all couples! It’s time to pop the question ...then you’ll have a great excuse to
come back and see us again.
Live music
Clonakilty has its finger on the pulse when it comes to the music
scene. Whether it’s a traditional music session in somewhere like
An Teach Beag,Con & Maura’s or O’Donovan’s Hotel,an after-
noon session in Scannell’s,a gig at the world famous DeBarra’s
Folk Club,a melody at Shanley’s Piano Bar or one of the numerous music festivals,
Clonakilty will definitely have your foot tapping to a musical beat wherever you
venture.Check locally for details of gigs and sessions – many of which are free
and some are timed earlier in the day to suit families.
Clonakilty Church –
Stained Glass paradise
You do not have to be an avid
church goer to appreciate a
visit to the Clonakilty Catholic
church. The architecture and stained glass alone
attract so much warranted attention that there
are now pamphlets on offer at the church giving
visitors details on the glass – which are artworks in
themselves.

The Sprigging School
was initiated by Lady

a worldwide revival of lace-making. The lace
from this school was known as‘sprigging’lace
because its pattern was shaped like a sprig or
a spray.Learn how this lace was made, the poor

Galley Head Lighthouse
Galley Head Lighthouse gives
superb views over the ocean.
The lighthouse was built in
1875 and it was from here that
the keepers would have witnessed the tragic loss of
the Lusitania in 1915. It is also claimed that Ray
Bradbury based his story‘The Fog Horn’on a
reported sighting of a giant sea serpent off Galley
Head in the 1800s. For an authentic experience, why
not hire a keeper’s cottage for the weekend.

Long Strand
There are
many fabulous
walks around
Clonakilty,but
to walk the beach at Long Strand,
Owenahincha,and to explore the
sand dunes,is a wonderful way to
spend some time. Whether you
take a pleasurable stroll or a
mad scramble,it’s a great way to
get in touch with nature and get a
lungful of fresh sea air.
CastlefrekeWoods andTrails
Between Rathbarry and Owenahincha,Castlefreke has
some great walks through woods, trails and alongside the
local beaches. Castlefreke castle – a gothic ruin which was burnt by Cromwellian
forces in 1648 – is one of Ireland’s most imposing ruins and although there is no
access to the building or grounds it’s very easy to find and spot from surrounding
roads.Castlefreke woods are State-owned and have a marked trail showing both a
linear and a circuit walk.

Rathbarry

proud
village,which has a delightful
assortment of things to see from

23. Take a Choo Choo tour!
Don’t let the weather stop you seeing the sights of Clonakilty.Take a tour in
Choo Choo – the town’s very own road train. During your tour you’ll soon
understand why Clonakilty has been designated a West Cork Heritage Town.
The architecture is quintessential Irish, from delightful traditional hand-painted
shop fronts, to an old Presbyterian church that is now home to the local post office
and the Town Council offices and Library which are housed in a converted Corn
Mill. Choo Choo makes its way along narrow streets and lanes that open into
elegant squares with the river flowing through. Pass along by the brewery
buildings and mills that mark the town’s trading heritage and soak up the
wonderful coastal scenery along the way. Go to www.modelvillage.ie for more info.
Enjoy some tasty homemade treats and freshly brewed Fairtrade coffee in one of
the many coffee shops or restaurants around town. Interestingly, Clonakilty was
designated a Fairtrade town in 2003 – the first of its kind in Ireland – and in 2012 it
was named ‘Ireland’s Best Fairtrade Town’.You’re spoiled for choice when it comes
to cafés, pubs, restaurants and hotels that all offer superb food and service.
Clonakilty is rich in heritage and history and boasts a number of museums and
places of interest including the Clonakilty Museum, the Michael Collins Visitor
Centre and the new Michael Collins Museum in Emmet Square. There’s also the
fantastic Model Railway Village (if the weather’s not too bad!) which is a favourite
with adults and children alike.
Shopping
Browse Clonakilty’s wide variety of shops, craft outlets and art galleries, all of
which offer great value and choice if you want to pick up those all-important
souvenirs or gifts. If you’d like something truly unique to mark your stay in Clon,
there is a fantastic array of West Cork-made products to choose from.
Clonakilty’s Park Cinema is a great option for a rainy day. With up-to-date releases
and listings that change on a weekly basis (see The Southern Star for details), you
and your family will have no problem passing a couple of hours on a wet evening.

You’re spoilt for choice in terms of leisure and relaxation facilities in and around
Clonakilty. The Quality Hotel, Inchydoney Island Lodge & Spa and Celtic Ross Hotel
(Rosscarbery) all provide a luxurious range of treatments and massages for men
and women to help you de-stress and feel great. See:

10great visitor
attractions
Skibbereen Heritage Centre
Located in the beautifully restored
Gasworks building,the Skibbereen
Heritage Centre houses the Great
Famine Commemoration Exhibition
as well as The Lough HyneVisitor
Centre where you can admire the salt-water
aquarium depicting life in Lough Hyne while
you watch an informative film of the reserve.
MizenVisitor Centre, Mizen Head
Situated at the end of the Mizen Peninsula, the
visitor centre is a fantastic place to visit. The
recently refurbished bridge across the massive
crevice in the rock is not for the faint-hearted,
but a stunning place to take photographs,or
simply listen to the waves crashing below. The keeper’s
kitchen and bedroom at the signal station at the end of
the walk has been preserved as it was,as a tribute to the
lifestyle of the men of the Irish Lights. There are many
fascinating displays to be seen, both here at the signal
station and back at the interactive visitor centre at the
start.
Charles Fort, Kinsale
Charles Fort is open all year to visitors and is
one of the best surviving examples of a 17th
Century star-shaped fort. Much of its original
1678 construction remains. The fort was actively
used by the military until 1922.It is also a
popular civil weddings venue now,too.
Illnacullen Gardens,
Garinish Island, Glengarriff
Located in the sheltered waters of Glengarriff harbour,
Garinish Island is home to one of the most luscious
gardens in Ireland. There is so much to see on the
island,from the Martello tower,to alluring walled gardens,the
Japanese gardens, the Casita, hidden beaches and the 100 steps
that leave you with a sense of enchantment. There are ferries
which operate from Glengarriff and on the way,you will pass the
seal colony where the languid creatures can be spotted taking
in the sun.
Bantry House and Gardens, Bantry
Bantry House is the ancestral home of the Earls of Bantry
and is still owned and run by direct descendants of the
Earls. The house and gardens command stunning views over
the bay and the gardens which include lawn tennis courts,
mazes and the famous climb of 103 steps, are stunning to explore.Tours
of the house are given and there is a café on site.
Rosscarbery adventures
Head to Rosscarbery for an adventure-
packed and family-oriented day at
Smuggler’s Cove and the Lagoon
Activity Centre.Play Adventure Golf on
the pirate-themed all-weather course in Smuggler’s
Cove or get lost in the Smugglers Maze.In July,
August and September why not try and find your
way through Ireland’s largest corn maize maze.
Afterwards enjoy a coffee,ice-cream or pizza on
the stunning sun decking overlooking Rosscarbery
Bay. Then head down to the Lagoon Activity Centre,
probably the safest place in Ireland to get on the
water.Rent a pedal boat,take a kayaking lesson or
try out Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP),knowing
that if you fall in,all you have to do is stand up in the
3-foot deep lagoon. And if that doesn’t appeal to you send
the kids off and simply relax on the over-water deck.

enjoy wonderful local food, take a walking or bus tour
with a local guide or experience a thrilling ride in a
high speed boat and see the beauty and nature of the
sea. Then, depending on which island you visit, settle
