The City of Kalamata
The Messinian capital of Kalamata is sits at the head of the Messinian Gulf, between the Messini
and Mani peninsulas with the famous city of Sparta to the north. It position makes Kalamata an
excellent lcoation from which to explore the beauty of the surrounding areas. Kalamata is famous
for the Kalamatianos dance and the silk kerchief as well as it succulent black olives, honeyed figs
and the sesame-covered sweet called pastelli. all of these delicuious fares can be tasted at the
vast new market by the bus station.
The city of Kalamata has three main areas; the old town with its narrow wandering streets, the
long seafront and the residential quarters with its strict grid plan. The seafront has all the amenities
of a resort: hotels, restaurants, cafes, ice cream parlours and bars, but it is fairly low key
compared to other towns. The beach is clean with clear blue water and is ideal for swimming.
Another of kalamata's attraction is the train park at the end of Aristomemous street. The park has
cafes with a performance area, shady trees to sit under, a duck pound, and ice cream parlour in
the converted station. There are antique trains displayed on the disused railway tracks. Near the
water front is the Kalamata School of Fine Arts which exhibits the work of Greek Artists. The
residential quarter is mostly new as it was rebuilt after the 1986 earthquake that killed 20 people
and left 12,000 homeless.
Kalamata's charming old town is topped majestically by a 13th century Frankish fortress which
was built by Geoffrey de Villehardouin. On the north side of the citadel there is a little Byzantine
church which is dedicated to the Virgin of Kalomata (of the good eye) and the town is belived to
have been named after it.
From the ancient fortress you will find wonderful vistas of ocean below with its sandy and pebbly
beach. You will also be able to see across the deep green plains of Messinian.
Kalamata's old city has busy streets and shops that reaches out underneath the fortress. Here is
where you will find the Byzantine church of the Virgin Ypapanti and the convent of the Kalograies.
The nuns of the convent are famous for their weaving and embroidering of the Kalamata silks.
There are many other interesting churches in Kalamata, the oldest one is the historic church of
Agii Apostoli (13th c.). It is here that the Greek Revolution against the Turks was formally declared
on March 23, 1821. And the Benaki Museum displays many archaeological remains from the War
of Independence. The museum also presents a small collection of folklore, fine art exhibits and
houses a library containing 60.000 volumes.
Every summer Kalamata theatre put on cultural events such as concerts featuring jazz, rock and
2. classical Greek plays. These event are held in the amphitheatre of the fortress.
With all that Kalamata has to offer it is hardly suprising that it is a popular destination with visitor to
the region of Messinia.
