  2. Hi everyone, Welcome to this lecture, entitled “CryENGINE3 Rendering Techniques” My name is Tiago Sousa, Principal R&D Graphics Programmer at Crytek (extra: for the past 8 years – worked on Far Cry/Crysis 1, tons of GDC demos, and latest project was Crysis 2, our first multiplatform game ). This will be a Crytek talk, and not everything I say will match the views of Microsoft (if review forms, ask for filling at end) 08/03/11 21:21 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 4. Going out of confort zone: Multiplatform: Our first multiplatform game/engine, most team members with only PC background experience and almost 0 or 0 experience on consoles. Main goal: Ship simultaneosly on all 3 main platforms. Urban environments VS Jungles: almost 10 years making jungles, give us a break... finaly a diferent challenge. Regular urban environments => boring, Destroyeable “urban jungle” => interesting. Carefully picked changes Multiplatform  Risky. All refactorings needed to take into account all platforms. Per platform specific techniques/optimizations? QA/debugging hell. All rendering approaches were generalized, only went per-platform specific to workaround platform limitations or for really big bang for the buck performance gains. All shaders code shared among all platforms (hlsl pc/x360 – straighforward cg for ps3), besides couple per platform bits (optimization flags for ps3. Specific x360/pc attributes). And still was a huge maintenance/debugging/optimization challenge. “ Disrespect the impossible” mantra: - Top notch quality for all platforms, _no lead platform_. Top quality on all specs, no sloppy specs work as in C1. All rendering techniques on all platforms 5 year old HW running a Crysis game. All this resulted in~3.5 years of freaking hard work (days, nights, weekends, sleepless nights, been there, done that) 08/03/11 21:21 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 5. “ Make it work” – porting existing functionality. This are some of the first images from project I could find, top one is using crysis 1 assets for porting, with most functionality still missing and it was running at 12 fps on consoles.. sigh “ OMG” moments 30 ms on Post Processing 10 ms on HDR Post Processing Similar funny surprises “ Make it right/fast” Refactoring and optimizing Every ms counts 08/03/11 21:21 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. 6. Interesting bit – we ended up being CPU bound on the X360 for most cases, particularly during heavy combats (physics/AI/etc) Generalize and optimize for worst case scenario Maximum bandwidth sharing Don’t repeat work. Do you really need to downsample some texture multiple times for diferent effects ? Most of the times, turns out no - batch such effects. Minimize amount of memory transfers/resolves. Avoid unnecessary resolves/restores, write outside your main target edram memory region. Minimize clears No unnecessary fullscreen passes. Fullscreen passes cost alot, if fetching from fullscreen target a minimum of ~0.25 ms on x360 and ~0.4 ms on ps3. Avoid them or batch as much as possible in them. Amortize costs over frames. Anything that doens’t need to be computed everyframe, skip it. But keep in mind mgpu systems. Carefull with peaks... Share, share, share and did I say share already ? Batch as much as possible. And the usual tricks, for example for particles, minimize amount of interpolators, use octogonal particle shape to minimize fillrate, half res, etc. 08/03/11 21:21 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. 7. Help art/design keep within their budget Show them how much their work costs. Keep it simple. We found it was best to keep it to minimal information so that anyone could understeand where GPU costs were. Simply showing shadows/lighting/transparents and opaque passes costs helped imensively. Try training the more technical guys to use PIX/GPAD. From times to times, there’s still some particular cases that costs a lot and not clear why - PIX to the rescue. Streamline optimization, it’s on everyone plate 1 hour art optimization VS 1 week of a programmer optimization. Self-evidently its much more efficient having hundreeds of artists/designers optimizing levels in hours, than having few programmers spending weeks optimizing. Win Win deal – save time and performance at same time. Also self evident, the more programmers/art/design optimize, the more improves the visuals will benefict due to aditional available performance for other things Budgets / monitor performance / automated testing: Cannot stress enough how important this is.. withouth budgets it’s not possible to impose limits. And make sure that everyone understeands that this are guidelines, not numbers graved on stone – there are always levels that require much more lighting cost and vice versa for example. Always keep an eye on performance. Play the game, make couple pix/gpad captures every week, look for something out of place. We introduced as well automated testing, whenever someone commited code, a series of tests would be executed measuring performance at specific spots. Helped tracking quicker whenever someone broke something or checked in inneficient code. This is an area that we will keep evolving for sure with our next projects. 08/03/11 21:21 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 10. Particularly important for deferred lighting.. Can minimize light range clipping (notice brights highlights being clipped by dark alpha blended surface) or any alpha blending case on top of bright surface, like decals, fog volumes, darker smoke particles and such. Minimize precision artefacts on darker regions of image. Allows for physically based post processes – Motion Blur, Depth of Field (and others) should be done before tone mapping. This final image would be almost impossible to achieve in LDR. And most importantly, it improves the art workflow significantly – as it minimizes the amount of time artists have to waste workaround such issues on more old fashioned engines. 08/03/11 21:21 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. 18. MRT Blending Perf: obvious, but... Make sure to disable hi precision blending on non-additive/multiplicative There is no A2B10G10R10F_EDRAM render target equivalent for textures, we were resolving at beggining into A16B16G16R16F which added extra BW hit on general passes. Tried diferent formats RG11B10/others but there always some precision artefacts Final solution was to resolve to A2B10G10R10, trade ALU for BW which worked quite well for us. Check out Aliasing7e3 sample in the XDK for this RGBK on PS3 means cannot use HW blending Workaround HW Read/Write from destination target Convenient custom blending modes 08/03/11 21:21 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. 21. Base idea: reuse diffuse lighting accumulation No redundant work as in vanila UV space approach Concept also expandeable to UV space approach Aproximate Sub-Surface Scattering in screen space Poisson distribution for taps, straighforward bilateral blur using depth for discarding samples. Best bits: No aditional memory requirements for atlas Cost proportional to screen area coverage VS fixed cost per surface update Plus Zcull is your biggest friend. 34. Re-projection + velocity buffer We got rid of our old approach of using the sphere around camera approach has it mainly worked for camera rotations For static geometry, straighforward to compute how much a pixel moved compared to previous frame, by using depth and previous view projection matrix can compute previous frame pixel location and compute delta (velocity) to current frame. Handle dynamic geometry by outputting velocity Full resolution means at least ~3 ms spent. Not much can do for speeding up (for worst case scenario) Use half resolution instead Inspired by KZ2 approach [5] To save BW, we ended up storing 2 rgba8 targets – one rgbk encoded with final result, and the other with the composition mask. On pc just straighforward FP16, with mask on alpha Object velocity buffer dilation Avoid unpleasant sharp silhouettes -> Dilate slightly velocity buffer Done on the fly, on same pass as when applying motion blur Good enough and no aditional passes/resolves Do it in HDR, before Tone Mapping Physically correctness Bright streaks are kept and propagated [1] Looks great on bright particles For console specs we used 9 taps and clamping to a maximum range to avoid noticeable undersampling. PC hi specs, 24 taps. 08/03/11 21:21 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
