Whitsundays, Queensland, Australia, 1980s
1. Tourism & the Whitsundays in the 1980s
I was involved in the Whitsundays tourism industry from 1979 to 1987. Firstly, I
was a tour guide for camping & resort/hotel tours along Australia’s east coast with
2 or 3 night stopovers in the Whitsundays, then as a tour operator packaging
Whitsundays tour products then as a resident in Shute Harbour and Airlie Beach
(1984 – 1987). In mid 1987, my wife (Suzanne) and I sailed from Shute Harbour to
the Hamilton island airstrip aboard Myer Page’s (Australian Pacific or APT) yacht
as we departed Australian shores for a few years with our North American base in
Vancouver BC.
The 1980’s were are interesting period in the development of tourism in the
Whitsundays.
This amateur collection of photos, links, You Tube videos etc might be enjoyed by
those who were in the Whitsundays during the 1980s.
If you have some material to contribute, that would be greatly appreciated – just
send to Steve Noakes, steve@pacificasiatourism.org

3. ‘Less than two weeks before the second Hamilton Island Race, in 1985, the lobby, reception
area and function rooms of the only resort on the island went up in flames, causing a
devastating amount of damage.
Despite the tragedy, Keith Williams, the Queensland entrepreneur who at that time owned the
island, pushed ahead with the regatta. The inaugural boat race in 1984 had been a huge
success. The combination of challenging sailing conditions and a tropical festival atmosphere
lured more than 90 entrants to the week-long event. The first year had been a success and
Williams was committed to growing race week.
The idea first came to Williams during the 1983 America’s Cup in Newport, Rhode Island, when
Australia won. ‘

13. The managed funds boom of the 1980’s saw new $ flooding
into Queensland’s tourism infrastructure – and the
Whitsundays was in the action!
‘The 80s boom teetered and then crashed, however, after the dark days of October
1987 and the property industry fiascos of 1989-92.
Tricontinental collapsed through exposure to bad loans made to companies such as
those associated with Qintex and Bond Corporation, Hooker Corporation (whose
trusts had been in financial trouble since at least 1984) went into liquidation four
short years after being taken over by Melbourne real-estate mogul Georg Herscu
(who was subsequently gaoled), and several management companies, both in retail
and in super, similarly folded in the late 1980s after their equities funds had
incurred heavy losses.’

14. During the 1980s, the financial planning industry became one of
the largest growth industries in Australia—becoming in fact the
service industry that underwent greatest expansion during this
period.
Part of this explosion in growth can be accounted for by the fact
that there was a rapid increase in financial products.
Funds held by public unit trusts, for example, were estimated to
have increased by 300% between September 1985 and June 1989,
to $26 billion. Pp 85

15. Up until late 1987, the funds management industry was promoted
in often exuberant and ostentatious terms: magazines like
Personal Investment tended to feature the stories of investment
managers, advisers or investors against a backdrop of Ferraris,
tennis courts, pools and mansions, leading one disgruntled
investor to write into the magazine complaining of
‘advertisements disguised as general interest features describing
the excesses of people in “rich men’s toys”’.
The financial world was promoted as limitless and boundless in
potential … pp 96

overshadowed a dated Hayman Island facility.
It was demolished and replaced by a five star international resort in
1987, aimed once again at the luxury market.

Bernie & Yvonne Katchor.
Quicksilver (Port Douglas) won the
Queensland Tourism Awards for the
category ‘Tour & Transport Operator – Local’
.
The way the national awards worked then
was that the State winners went through to
the nationals BUT the Federal Tourism
Minister could make a nomination to the
national awards also.
Hon. John Brown had been a recent sailor in
the Whitsundays and nominated WRY as his
Ministerial choice – and WRY won !!

the iconic sailing events in Australia. When Torres Herald and Dalhia
set off across Pioneer Bay in 1977 for a grudge race, little did they
realise they had begun a tradition that is still going.

95. Airlie Beach Race Week in the Whitsundays - an event which has grown each year from
humble beginnings, originally conceived to promote the opening of the very first Hog's
Breath Cafe in Australia.
Don Algie, had arrived in the Whitsundays aboard his classic 55' sloop Storm in 1987
looking for a site to start his brainchild Hog's Breath Cafe after spending four years in
Florida. His first taste of big boat regattas was the Hamilton Island Race Week in Easter of
1988 where Storm performed well enough in Cruising division for Don to look at staging a
regatta on the mainland at Airlie Beach.
A year later, after discussions with the Whitsunday Sailing Club and the upcoming opening
of the first Hog's Breath Cafe in Australia, plans were put in place to sponsor a major
regatta on the mainland. The regatta was to include a mixture of bay racing around the
buoys and long distance races around the adjacent islands of the area over a period of a
week.
The Whitsunday Sailing Club and Don decided to hold the first regatta in the lead up to the
famous Great Whitsunday Fun Race in September in 1990. This event was to be called the
Hog's Breath Cruising Classic to cater for the influx of coastal cruising yachts which visit the
Whitsundays at that time of the year.
