- Welcome to our launch of SIG Design & Technology today here at Westfield Shopping Centre. I’m Julia Smith and most of you know me already as the person who manages PR for D & T. Our aim is to provide you with inspiration and examples of how the fifth elevation offers innovative, joined up sustainable solutions and to give you the chance to meet professionals who are involved in the challenge of building a more sustainable environment on a daily basis – but before that, just a couple of house keeping issues:No fire drills are planned today, so if the fire alarm sounds leave the building by ………… and assemble ……………. He also has 18 years of experience with Eternit Building Materials . His role is now to develop Design & Technology as a specification brand within Sheffield Insulation Group’s Building Solutions division. Gary Grant is an Independent consultant ecologist with 30 years of experience advising on the greening of existing and new cities.Until recently he was a Director at AECOM Design+Planning. He is an expert on green roofs and living walls (author published by BRE Press and contributor to the London Plan Policy on Living Roofs and Walls and the Green Roof Guidance for Greater Manchester).Projects have included the Westfield living wall, London 2012 Olympic Park and the Natural History Museum Wildlife Garden.Finally: If you have any questions – please feel free to ask as we go along – and there will be opportunity for further questions and answers at the end of the session. - Green wall at Westfield – joke? – Currently wearing its overcoat, but is fundamentally healthy. Learn more about it later.This is a wall that is doing more than one thing. As well as providing a spectacular setting, it is playing a vital role on this busy pedestrian accessMore generally, as well as enclosing the building and holding up the roof, living walls provide visual pleasure and biodiversity – and probably help to clean up the air as well. This is what I want to talk about – the way that walls and roofs in our society need today to do more than just one thing, and how our products can help to make it possible.
- The simplest concept of a roof is just something that keeps the rain out.But each roof is different! Variables include type of building, its use and the locationSo effective roofing is far more than child’s play! D & T designs and supplies carefully selected highly engineered products that have been chosen for their sustainability, functionality, longevity and/or aesthetic strengths. We recognise that roofs need to be designed so that all products interface with each other as complementary and not fail under guarantee.Our aims are two fold:to design a roof that will last the lifetime of the building and to guarantee as we say - roofing solutions inspiration to installation
- But these days we need our roofs to do so much more.We commonly think of the roof as the fifth elevation, but too often it is the least hard working elevation. This cannot continue. - With more people and more buildings, we cannot afford to ‘waste’ roof space. We already know that the roof has a large role to play in insulating our buildings. Part L of the building regulations – increasingly strict. Next version of Part L, expected in April 2010, will ask for reductions in emissions of CO2 of 25 per cent relative to 2006 – the next step on our path to making all new domestic buildings zero carbon by 2016, and all non-domestic buildings zero carbon by 2019.
- To achieve this we need not only better levels of insulation, but also higher standards of construction – cutting down on air leakage will be essential to achieve our standards. We need well designed, well insulated roofs, with reliable systems built by trained reliable people.SIG offers full design, supply, installation and guarantee of our products, so the roof will perform as it is intended to – and will continue to do so.
- Preventing urban sprawl – roof becomes an amenity. When Dickon Robinson was development director of Peabody Trust, he advocated putting all the gardens on the roof.What could a roof garden be? A place to sit. A place to play. A place to grow plants.Rosie Boycott, chair of London Food, writing in the Observer, 24 Jan about the future: ‘Rooftops and spare places will be full of vegetables; not obviously, enough to feed the city, but enough to make people more resilient and more aware of where food comes from
- The green roof need not always be an accessible roof. There are many other advantages of green roofs. By planting the roof, you have a number of benefits – benefits that were realised a long time ago.Hanging Gardens of Babylon – effectively a series of green roofs – were one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Nebuchadnezzar II built them for his wife who was homesick for the plants of her native Persia.I’m now going to hand you over to Gary Grant who is our expert today on green roofs and living walls.
- In Scandinavia, roofs were insulated with sod that was stripped from surrounding grass meadows. Underneath the sod are structurally heavy timber beams interspaced with birch bark to act as a waterproofing layer.
- At one of Europe’s most remarkable ancient monuments, the 5,000-year-old Skara Brae, Neolithic carvings beneath the glass viewing roof of one of its famous domed homes were threatened by an unstable environment. Our own PIB was chosen by Historic Scotland to create a new watertight garden roof that blends in aesthetically and could be left undisturbed for up to 50 years.
- Insulating properties of green roofs – studies at Nottingham Trent University show that temperatures fluctuate less beneath the membrane of a green roof than a traditional roof.Winter / SummerMean Temperature: 0°C / 18.4°CTemperature under membrane of conventional roof: 0.2°C / 32°CTemperature under membrane of green roof: 4.7°C / 17.1°C
- Research has shown that a green roof with a 12 cm substrate layer can reduce sound by 40dB and one of 20 cm by 46-50dB
- Green roofs play a key role in SUDS (sustainable urban drainage systems). Typically, a green roof will intercept at least the first 5mm of rain in any shower, reducing run off to sewers etc.
- Green roofs can reduce the urban heat island – the effect that makes cities hotter than the surrounding countryside. The greatest benefit comes when a building is entirely enveloped in vegetation – green roofs and green walls
- Green roofs can make a considerable contribution to biodiversity. Depends on the type of roof, with a mixture of sedums and native wild flowers providing the very best habitat. Particularly invaluable for invertebrates (creepy crawlies)A study of 10 green roofs in London found 51 different species of spiders on 10 roofs. 48 species of invertebrates were found on three sedum roofs at Canary Wharf, London Docklands. Also has been evidence of some species of birds nesting on green roofs.Five pairs of skylarks were discovered breeding on the green roof of the Rolls Royce factory in Chichester, West Sussex.Mike would now like to run through withyou the specifics of the D&T modular green roof system & other innovative roofing solutions.
- Green roofs are one of the few win-wins. But some may be nervous. You need the right green roof, you need it supplied by a company you can trust, and you need to feel secure that the membrane will function throughout the life of the roof.SIG is offering a new lightweight modular green roof system.SIG D & T’s modular green roof system is made up of 0.5 m module trays which slot together for a seamless finish and provide plant drainage. It can be either a sedum roof or a bespoke horticultural selection of sedum, indigenous grasses and wildflowers. The modules are installed over a geotextile filter fabric, which sits on top of the waterproofingThe modules interlock and need no fixing, so there is no danger of puncturing the roof membrane.Waterproofing is with SIG’s Rhepanol H G membrane system.Rhepanol hg is 70 per cent natural materials – Polyisobutylene – the stuff they make chewing gum from!
