Our aim is to provide you with inspiration and examples of how the fifth elevation offers innovative, joined up sustainable solutions and to give you the chance to meet professionals who are involved in the challenge of building a more sustainable environment on a daily basis – but before that, just a couple of house keeping issues:No fire drills are planned today, so if the fire alarm sounds leave the building by ………… and assemble ……………. Gary Grant is an Independent consultant ecologist with 30 years of experience advising on the greening of existing and new cities.Until recently he was a Director at AECOM Design+Planning. As well as providing a spectacular setting, it is playing a vital role on this busy pedestrian accessMore generally, as well as enclosing the building and holding up the roof, living walls provide visual pleasure and biodiversity – and probably help to clean up the air as well. This is what I want to talk about – the way that walls and roofs in our society need today to do more than just one thing, and how our products can help to make it possible.
The simplest concept of a roof is just something that keeps the rain out.But each roof is different! Variables include type of building, its use and the locationSo effective roofing is far more than child’s play! With more people and more buildings, we cannot afford to ‘waste’ roof space. We already know that the roof has a large role to play in insulating our buildings. Part L of the building regulations – increasingly strict. Next version of Part L, expected in April 2010, will ask for reductions in emissions of CO2 of 25 per cent relative to 2006 – the next step on our path to making all new domestic buildings zero carbon by 2016, and all non-domestic buildings zero carbon by 2019.
To achieve this we need not only better levels of insulation, but also higher standards of construction – cutting down on air leakage will be essential to achieve our standards. The green roof need not always be an accessible roof. There are many other advantages of green roofs. By planting the roof, you have a number of benefits – benefits that were realised a long time ago.Hanging Gardens of Babylon – effectively a series of green roofs – were one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Nebuchadnezzar II built them for his wife who was homesick for the plants of her native Persia.I’m now going to hand you over to Gary Grant who is our expert today on green roofs and living walls.
In Scandinavia, roofs were insulated with sod that was stripped from surrounding grass meadows. Underneath the sod are structurally heavy timber beams interspaced with birch bark to act as a waterproofing layer.
At one of Europe’s most remarkable ancient monuments, the 5,000-year-old Skara Brae, Neolithic carvings beneath the glass viewing roof of one of its famous domed homes were threatened by an unstable environment. Our own PIB was chosen by Historic Scotland to create a new watertight garden roof that blends in aesthetically and could be left undisturbed for up to 50 years.

Green roofs play a key role in SUDS (sustainable urban drainage systems). Typically, a green roof will intercept at least the first 5mm of rain in any shower, reducing run off to sewers etc.
