Question 3
1. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and
why?
2. When producing my media product, it would have to go through a phase which includes production a
publication, there are 5 main steps to this:
• The first stage is all about what will go in the magazine, what will it look like, what audience it will be
aimed at, and what genre it would be.
•The second would be researching into the current opposing magazines that are already out there and
what they are like and how well they are doing. So like what kind of audience they are aimed at, and how
successful they are.
•The third would be making up a rough cut or flat plan of the product as a type of visual aid of round abouts
what you would like the product to look like.
•Then constructing the product as the final piece.
•And last distributing the product, will it be distributed on a large scale or small? This mainly depends on
the audience of the magazine.
3. The fact that my product is targeted at indie/rock
teenagers, it is very similar to magazine such as NME
and Kerrang! These magazines are distributed as
mainstream. This means that my product is likely to be
distributed to a large audience rather than a small one.
This means my magazine would likely be published by
IPC Media, which is the publisher of NME magazine,
and with NME being the only music magazine they
publish currently it is a positive for my magazine
because it means they will likely be open to publishing a
new music magazine. And with most of the products
IPC Media publish being mainstream it means that the
would likely distribute their products in places such as
WHSmith, which is a really well know store.
4. IPC Media is the company that publishes NME magazine.
And with the company knowing exactly what the
audience wants in NME by having a website for NME as
well as their own website for IPC Media it means the
audience can request for what it wants to see in NME.
And by knowing the audience well it means that the
publishing company can create products that suits the
audience’s requests and needs, this means that the
products are selling well and is bringing the company a
higher revenue that it can use to reinvest back into the
product.
I would say that my product is very similar to NME
because it follows the codes and conventions of that
magazine, like the audience it aims for, the clothes it
mentions and the music it includes. IPC Media produces
over 60 iconic media brands, with print alone reaching
almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men –
almost 26 million UK adults – while our websites
collectively reach over 20 million users every month.
This means that my product would be distributed on a
large scale because of the amount of people that
purchase IPC Media products.
5. Products such as NME are advertised
through social networks, such as Facebook,
online websites, tour posters, and also on
the radio. This is a really affective way of
reaching the target audience, and is also a
way of reaching a more mainstream
audience because younger people definitely
use these websites on a regular basis so
they will see the advertisements.
These advertising techniques are perfect for
my product because my product is rather
mainstream, and a lot of audiences use
facebook, so I could even reach different
types of people through this.
6. It would be good to distribute my
product to places such as
WHSmith, HMV, Tesco, Asda, and
local newsagents. There would
be a prescription service provided
online which would allow regular
readers the chance to get the
magazine cheaper as well as sent
to their home and some other
perks.
Web 2.0 will make all of this a lot
easier, the distribution and
advertising online.
