One slide summary
• You can't change other people
• Responsibility is not a character trait, it's a mental process
• It's SUBJECTIVE
• It's TRANSIENT

• Study on typical mental states that our mind processes through to avoid responsibility
o Denial Ignoring the existence of something
o Lay Blame Holding others at fault for causing something
o Shame Laying blame onto oneself (often felt as guilt)
o Justify Using excuses for thing being the way they are
o Quit Giving up to avoid the pain of Shame and Obligation
o Obligation Doing what you have to instead of what you want to

• Key's to responsibility
o Intention Intending to respond from Responsibility
o Awareness Catching yourself in a mental state
o Confrontation Facing yourself to see what you can learn or improve
Write a use case
                                  Time = 2 minutes

Denial Lay Blame Justify Shame Obligation Quit

We don't have He broke the We didn't It was my I'm going to the I'm going to
issues in our build again, he follow up on fault, sorry stupid meeting, the stupid
team never listens our action guys, don't social pressure, meeting, I
points, but look any there is nothing can answer
nobody cares further, it was I can do about it my mails
about it my doing there as well
                                        anyway

• Each person writes down 1 use case for the 2 mental state's of their group
• Webex ppl sametime me the use cases, I'll drop it in the group

o Denial Ignoring the existence of something
o Lay Blame Holding others at fault for causing something
o Shame Laying blame onto oneself (often felt as guilt)
o Justify Using excuses for thing being the way they are
o Quit Giving up to avoid the pain of Shame and Obligation
o Obligation Doing what you have to instead of what you want to
Write a responsible solution
                                 Time = 10 minutes

• Discuss the problems, share context
• Come up with responsible behaviours / actions
• Write them on the back of the post-it
• Webex ppl do the same for their problems and sametime them to me

For Example:

• OK, I will go to that stupid meeting, BUT I'm working on solution X
• …
Team Task assignment
Denial Lay Blame Justify Shame Obligation Quit Responsible

• Print out the PDF on your wall (more translations)
• Draw a whiteboard like the example above
• Each time you face a problem: reflect what behaviour / mental state is experienced ?
• Put a post-it on the whiteboard mental state column w/ short description of the problem
• Move the post-it to the right when a responsible action follows at a later point

      OR

• Do it for yourself
