tips from

p.1.
• Become Famous. At All Cost. Then become more famous.
• Claim a space, and stick to it. Block / fight others who try to enter your space. (Or you are weak, and therefore deserve to be
copied, then eaten).
• Celebrities/Brand Ambassadors: are your best mouthpieces, need to choose the right famous faces.
• China is online, all the time: have a high grade presence online, before and after the brand arrives.
• Chinese consumers: are obsessive researchers and commentators/ bloggers of price, brands and products.
• Celebrities are Online: top celebrity Chinese bloggers command 10K Euro or more, per blog. (Av. Quality blog cost is 100 Euro, per
blog).
• Top Quality product: Chinese consumers appreciate quality and are happy to pay for it. Show it to them, and they will buy!
• Global is OK, welcomed, and required for credibility, but, never forget, China is Totally Awesome!
• TV matters: celebrities are on TV, a lot. See previous points.
• Persistence: time matters. Brands can last on 1 slogan for years..(as long as it’s a good one, but then you can never shake it, for about
100 years).
• Don’t try to be everything.
• Chinese are the inventors of paper, and, paperwork. Permission is required for anything larger than a tea party, including
events, media, PR, copy, images, online content and script screening. Be prepared to fill out lots of forms, to be able to show
absolutely everything, (twice), produce photos of your grandma, (if they ask) then, get it all translated at 1 of 3 official stated offices
and then take it all back, and, then wait for the sacred chop.
• One child policy has been in place for 2 generations. This means for your customer it’s really all about Me, (not you), Me. And I have 2
parents and 4 grandparents who all agree it’s all about Me and what can you do for Me?

P 2..
• Chinese companies now sponsor top league football, F1, The World Cup, The America’s Cup and more….Why do they do this? So they
can talk to their Chinese customers! (not to you).
• Investment: marketing in China has it’s costs, as is with all developed markets. Going big means: bring a big cheque book.
• Government: can be a great marketing partner, and they always bring CCTV and local media.
• Mass media is great, but online and C2C references are always better.
• Hong Kong and Harbin are very far apart, as are their local TV and media platforms.
• Regional activation will always be reqd. A million dollar event in Hong Kong will be lucky to make the newspaper in Beijing and vice
versa. A local event will make the regional Tv, newspapers, internet..
• Cool fashion is fine, sex is not: Recent “entertainment and morality re-alignment” decrees have shut down many wildly successful
beauty and TV game shows. (ie: , sell the product with a smile, no wet T-shirt comps, no dancing girls, no nudity).
• Chinese don’t use Google or YouTube, they use Baidu and watch YouKu.
• Chinese are 1 in 5 persons on the planet, there’s a Chinese guy living upstairs or around the corner from you. Guess what search engine
he uses?
