10.
11. Why Open MOOCs?
• Many members want to participate but don’t have the
opportunity, or want a test before committing fully
• Opportunity for us to leverage existing OER and add
benefits of interaction and data collection offered by
edX platform
• Combine open enrollment with open content to create
a diverse array of Open MOOCs
• edX uses open source software
12. We will be known as OECx. Member offerings will come under this portal, carrying
the name of the authoring institution. The authoring institution decides which open
license to use.
13. Key points for participation
• Must be a member of the OEC
• MOOC must be built from existing open content, but
can be enhanced to become more MOOC-friendly
• No cost for members to participate, though resources
need to be allocated to developing and facilitating the
MOOCs
• Pilot of a limited number of courses for Sept-Nov, then
will open up to greater participation
14. Options for OECx MOOCs
• MOOCs can be offered in any language
• Length can range from 2 weeks to 15 weeks; we
encourage shorter
• MOOCs can be facilitated or self-paced
• Certificates can be offered
• Series can be offered, from one institution or between
institutions
• We can be more creative with pedagogy: remixed
content, team teaching/co-authoring, sequence
options, etc.
