- Identify gaps in skills material on GEL Rachel had done audit Liaised with the library’s Research Support lead Search Jorum for relevant material Using keywords from gaps Download and repurpose up to 10 learning objects Save from Jorum and put up on WebCT Flexible number Document the process to promote to academics Main aim to promote Jorum as a great place to find ‘off the shelf’ learning and teaching material
- Just to illustrate how study skills are linked to the independent learner and how study skills training, tutors and the library can all link up to Jorum in the learning process
- 11 learning objects Exceeded our main aim Available for anyone that wants to sign up to try out Documented the re-purpose process Changing generic material into subject specific Documented process
- All RLOs are designed to be adapted as necessary and this was part of the project.
- All from different UK HEIs and FEIs Different branding Different intended audience Different ‘look’ and ‘feel’ BUT does this matter? Different formats (HTML, Word, SCORM etc.) Go from very basic (research methods) to very sophisticated (stats) Great for different learning styles Different levels Each learning object aimed at different levels but can be appropriate for your students too Instructions Each LO comes with instructions of how to use, some context and information about re-purposing (to some extent)
- Very nice looking package – lots of work gone into it BUT has other institution’s branding BUT it does the job – e.g. referencing tool from Cardiff used by medical students for their work.
- Interactive/participative Designed to be discussed with tutors and fellow students Subject specific Generic version BUT also adapted for use with medical students Fairly straightforward to adapt.
- Access and searching Jorum Registration with Athens – some academics found this problematic although this would be solved with JorumOpen Taxonomies (FE focused) and searching function leaves a lot to be desired. Took ages to find materials Contextualisation Many RLOs didn’t have much information about how they had been previously used (student details, type of session – face to face etc.) or how successful they had been. Need much more information about previous use to give an idea of the context. Subject specific material Need academic feedback on material to assess suitability Need advice on how to adapt to different subject areas Material not available Not everything has a learning object No appropriate numeracy items BUT – new material is added all the time so keep up! Process Each RLO will need different levels of technical skills to re-purpose. Some are very straightforward, others need more support (eLearning etc.). Would be good to know level of difficulty in re-purposing before uploading. GOOD NEWS: ***Intrallect conference in late March to meet developers and raise these issues.***
- Los on Sharable Resources Still in process Open up to all that want to use in University Work with academics etc. Would like to work closely with 1 – 5 academics to go through process and document any problems they encounter – try to understand any barriers. Please get in touch with me if you’d be willing to use and/or re-purpose one of our learning objects and answering a few questions about the process (Ana-Maria G) Promote the re-purposing process Will be translating my documenting process into promotion soon and sending out across the University to encourage use of Jorum. Would love some vox pop on the re-purposing process to help with this. Student feedback Would love to hear how students have used the learning objects and how many have accessed once they’re put on GEL website.
- New licences JorumOpen – material open to anyone globally under a Creative Commons licence JorumEducationUK – same as now JorumPlus – restricted to institution (kind of like an IR)
