My name is Laura Murray and I’m one of the librarians at LMU who’s here to help you conduct your research and format your papers.
As Business students you’ll need to be aware of the resources LMU has available to you for your research.
Talk about library services, how to find an article in a library database and catalog, plus Hoover’s
Just a few of the things you can do at the library, besides find books is use databases to find journal articles, download e-books, answer the odd question like, do people still use pens (I learned recently schools no longer teach cursive writing, hmm).
The library can also help you with your study skills, apply for jobs, update your resume, write cover letters and help with you online profile on sites like LinkedIn.
A bit of advice, jot down when your assignments are due and come visit the library early. We have librarians here to help you from 9-9 and we have chat available, if you prefer to chat with us.
There are librarians at Harrogate and Cedar Bluff and we can come to any campus by request.
Let’s start with the research process and then we’ll talk about a few resources.
First you need to pick a topic. Your professors will give you assignments to guide you, but you’ll be choosing the specific topic you want to write about.
Then you’ll begin looking at background information to help you narrow down what aspect of the topic you want to research. For example, you might be interested in electronics in business or robotics, but those are pretty broad. By gathering a bit of background information you can choose something more specific to research.
The third step is to search for appropriate sources. Here’s where the library can really help out. Your professor should tell you what types of sources are appropriate for the assignments. In some cases you’ll want to use current popular sources, and for other things you’ll need peer-reviewed and scholarly sources.
Fourth you’ll evaluate the sources you’ve found to see if they will help you write your paper.
Finally, you’ll need to cite your sources properly. The librarians can help you with APA as well, so once you’ve written your paper, feel free to bring it by and we can go over it with you.
To find the tools you can use to help you find sources for your papers, go to the library website.
There are many ways to find it:
From the LMU home page – just go to academics
From MyLMU
Or directly by typing library.lmunet.edu
From the library homepage you can
Search the catalog
Search databases for articles
Request an Interlibrary Loan to get materials from other places
And find our contact information
A few of the Business databases we have access to are Business Source complete, Computer Database, Hoover’s, and the Ebsco e-book collection. These are available in the library and online, even on your smart phone.
You can find Business Databases by clicking on the Databases button on the library home page.
Business databases contain information about business topics and are great sources to dig into your topic.
A really quick way to search popular databases is to click on the database button on the library home page and then type in your search in the middle box on this page.
You can choose to limit your search to Full Text and Peer Reviewed sources. When you click Search, you’ll get a list of results.
You will have to login to the databases. When you conduct a search you will be prompted to enter your credentials.
Inside Business Source Complete you’ll see there are 3 search boxes at the top to help you build a search.
You can use the subject terms found with each result to identify search terms that are more specific to your topic or focus.
Another resource that is a great starting place to help you choose and narrow a research topic is the Gale Virtual Reference Library.
Hoover’s Academic is another business resource that allows you to find information about company executives, documents and press releases about companies, as well as investment, research and stock information and companies.
Those are a few specific resources that you’ll find useful in your MBA studies. However, the library catalog is another resource you should utilize. You can conduct a search and find books, articles, websites, e-books, and more with a single search.
The catalog will show you what LMU owns or has access to as well as resources available worldwide. The resources that are owned by other library can be requested through Interlibrary Loan. So remember, the library is your access point to global resources.
The results list in the library catalog includes all types of formats. On the left-hand side you can limit the results list to e-books for example.
If you click on the title, you’ll see options to access the electronic resources.
The library website will look different next semester, but will be much easier to navigate. We love feedback, so if you see something you love/hate or the navigation is hinky, please chat us and we will fix it.
Those are a few ways to use the library and tools that can help you with your assignments. You can contact us in a variety of ways and we’d love to hear from you.
